What are some of the factors to consider before digging a borehole? I know a few farmers who have boreholes in their backyard. I am more concerned with the quantity and quality of the water.

The terrain is the biggest factor. How far you have to dig before you hit the water is another, and those two factors play off each other.

Which is the best terrain in this case, and is there a way to determine the preferable place to dig? I wouldn't want to use the trial and error method. Also, how can I tell if an area has salty water?
