What exactly does a lawn edger do that a weed eater can't do? My brother-in-law keeps telling me that I need one, but it sounds just like a weed eater to me, except it's bigger.

It's more precise and easier to control, so you get perfect cuts with it. It's nearly impossible to get the same look with a weed whacker. I'd ask your brother-in-law why he thinks you need one so badly. Maybe he has some ideas for your flower beds.

My guess is that your brother-in-law probably just bought one and loves it, so he's just sharing that enthusiasm with everyone else. He probably thinks it will make your life easier. A weed eater is more versatile, in my opinion.
