Livestock Auctions Are An Essntial Business

I believe livestock auctions are essential as well, but being safe is also critical. Thankfully, a lot of the auctions take place in large spaces where you can distance yourself from other people. There are always online auctions to check out, too.

    Skin irritation

I'm allergic to the urushiol found in the stems, leaves, and roots of poison oak, poison sumac, and poison ivy. My wife isn't allergic to the plants, so she does a lot of the weeding outside. The rashes I get from contact with the plant are so incredibly itchy!

Hi from the Northern part of Europe

It's nice to meet you! You have a decent-sized piece of land for getting started. Do you know what you might try to plant this year? The coronavirus will definitely make things more challenging for all of us, but we will get through the challenges together.

John Deere Makes Face Shields for Healthcare Workers

I recently learned that John Deere is making face shields for healthcare workers. I'm sure you are all aware of the shortage of personal protective equipment for healthcare workers, so I think it's great that John Deere is pitching in like this. It also keeps people employed during this...

    Easter/spring plants bad for pets?

Most types of lilies are highly toxic to cats, so I'd just stay away from those flowers all together. Daffodils are also poisonous to our pets. This is really too bad because my wife really loves them.

    How Accurate Are Rain Gauges

We just have a standard rain gauge on our fence, but I know they are not the most accurate. The most accurate type seems to be the weighing rain gauge. It can measure different types of precipitation, such as rain, snow, and hail. They are more expensive, though, and require more maintenance...

    How Is Everyone Doing?

They recently shut down our farmer's markets, which is really going to affect us. We made a significant amount of our profit by selling at farmer's market every week. We are going to try selling online, but we don't have a very big social media following, so we're nervous about how successful...

A Different Way of Doing Business

They've shut down our farmer's markets here, and I'm sure that's the case for many others, too. Unfortunately, we made a lot of our profit by selling at these markets. We are gearing up to start selling online. We will create an online form and arrange for free delivery. However, our social...

    Help a new farmer

Hello Nick, 10 acres is a good amount to start out with. That'll give you room to grow crops. I read a story a while back about a man who grew all of his food using neighbors' yards as gardens, so I know you can sustain yourself on 10 acres.

Do you drink unpasteurized milk from your goats/cows?

We don't drink unpasteurized milk. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has cited the fact that unpasteurized milk contains some harmful bacteria that can cause some pretty serious health problems. It just isn't worth the risk, in my opinion.

    DYI Hand Sanitizer

I'm making hand sanitizer available to all my workers both in little bottles and in larger ones in the barn. But it is so hard to find right now. So, I decided to look up how to make it myself, and it turns out, it's not very hard to do. You just mix 2/3 cup rubbing alcohol (90% or more) and...

    Homeless Garden Project

I think this is a great way to help people. The training would definitely give them skills they need to sustain themselves. Learning how to do various things on the farm can be especially beneficial as they can use these skills to grow their own food after they leave the program.

    Favorite toppings on burgers

Once I had a burger with bacon and barbecue sauce, and it was delicious! I usually put mustard, ketchup, and tomatoes on my burger. I also like Swiss, Colby Jack, or American cheese on my burger.

    Chili cookoff

I haven't entered one myself, but I did get to be a tester once. One of our local animal shelters has a chili cookoff each year, and one year, my family and I went and voted on our favorite chilis. It was a fun time, and we got to taste so many delicious chilis!

    Barn cats

I agree with those who have commented above. Give her a box and some blankets to nest in if she'd like. She'll probably find a secluded spot to have her kittens, and you may not see them for a couple of weeks. Just let her and her kittens be for a while. She will be protective of them, so it's...
