Last minute gift for teenage boy - solved

Thanks so much! I think I'm going to freeze some money and add some starter tools with it. If he doesn't like the tools (he should) he can always use the money to buy what he wants. Thank you both for the help!

    How often do you replace?

Shoot, you got me there. Sorry about that. I should have mentioned that it was used when we bought it. It was made in the 60s. We had to replace the belts and the tires, but not much more than that.

    Estimation for renting backhoe?

You can rent a 3.5-ton mini excavator from Home Depot for a little over $350 a day or a little over a grand a week. A 1-ton mini excavator goes for less than that. It's about $300 a day and $800 for the week. I hope this helps give you a starting point for negotiations.

    Starting an orange grove

I've looked into that myself, though I don't live in Florida. Orange trees seem to have a ton of diseases and pests that attack it which put me off.

    Broilers or layers?

Dual-purpose birds are the way to go. That way you get meat and eggs. There are plenty of great options like the Buff Orpington Hen and the Marsh Daisy Hen.

    Thoughts on second relief package

$600 does seem a bit stingy when so many are struggling. That small amount won't even cover rent for most people. However, I do agree that it's a good idea to phase out checks for those who have the funds to make it on their own. I won't be getting a check and I think that's fair. My husband...

Last minute gift for teenage boy - solved

I just learned that I bought the same PlayStation game as his other grandmother. I hate to give him money because it seems so unthoughtful. What else can I give him? I can't believe I'm down to the wire on this.

    Walmart+ membership

What do you guys think about Walmart's free shipping membership? I guess they're trying to compete with Amazon Prime again. Walmart+ is cheaper, but it lacks the entertainment package that comes along with Amazon Prime.

    Specialty crops

Bamboo is considered invasive where I live, so it's a no for me. I grow small organic salad greens, which are considered a specialty crop in my neck of the woods. It's a decent earner, but it's certainly not enough to sustain an operation alone. I think many growers treat specialty crops like...

    How often do you replace?

We've had our John Deere tractor for close to 20 years now, but it doesn't have the bells and whistles of more modern tractors which may very well be why it's still going. There's less "computer" to tear up.

    Mini skid-steer loader with remote

The idea of having one that will work via remote control sounds fantastic, but there must be some trade-offs because there's always some trade-offs. Unfortunately, YouTube is full of sellers and affiliates and I'd like an unbiased opinion. Have you guys tried these out?

    Neighbor kid allergic to strawberries

I don't see why it has to be all or nothing. I would speak with them to find out how serious it is first. If it's life or death, then you might try to reach a reasonable and safe compromise.

FDA Approved COVID Vaxx - You In?

Is anyone else shocked that the FDA approved the COVID-19 vaccination so quickly? I have friends and family who are hoping to get vaccinated as soon as possible while I'm more cautious. What about you? Are you in or out?

    4-H or girl/boy scouts

I would do the scouts because their activities are more diverse, and they're bound to interact with a wider pool of people. I'd let the girl join the girl scouts if that's her preference and it wouldn't put the family schedule in a crunch.

    Potluck dinners

I usually take a salad or dessert. I'm honestly not the best cook. I think my taste buds have changed as I've gotten older, so it's more difficult to tell whether something is seasoned appropriately.

    U Shaped post brackets

I've gotten things ordered from Ace Hardware and Lowe's before. They were very nice about helping me get what I needed. I didn't have to order a ton either. Give that try if you can't find a commercial source. Good luck!

    Tiny house living

I enjoy watching HGTV and I'm quite fascinated by all the tiny houses I've seen. They usually look fantastic and those people sure do A LOT with their limited space. It's a fun idea, but I don't think I'm cut out for tiny house living. I'm too messy. What about you?

    Anything better than Muck?

You can often find deals on these boots if you look around. Dick's Sporting Goods has some of the kids' sizes on sale for $80 or so. I like L.L. Bean's duck boots myself, but they are priced the same as your preferred brand.

    Ice sculptures

Goodness no. I can barely make a decent snowman. I bet you guys had a wonderful time. Ice sculptures are amazing works of art that require a lot of talent to craft.

    Cheaper to buy?

I'm trying to encourage more people in my community to start a garden next spring. I've been growing vegetables, herbs, and fruits for so long that I don't buy much of it at the store, so I'm not familiar with the average prices. What is usually cheaper to buy than it is to grow?
