I still need more info on this hump, raised feather sheets, hose or bar everyone is talking about. Is it only beneficial in short beansIJ Who makes themIJ Does AGCO make oneIJ If I make my own, where do I mount itIJ With whatIJ What kind of hoseIJ Sorry for all the dumb questions, but this is a new one on me. I know of no one in my area with such a contraption. Mike

Mike, Just click on tips and go to the gleaner upgrades site and click on headers and you will see a picture of the hose on the sickle. As far as the Johnson Rock Guard you can call this number and get some info on it. 1-800-523-3979 or 502-267-5263. I perfer the Johnson Bar, I think you save quite a few beans with this installed on your head. I wouldn't waste the money on the raised feather sheets from Gleaner. They won't help you save any beans. And they create more clean up problems as dirt gets under them and causes a lot of problems.

As for the hump kit, I'm getting mine through an AGCO dealer. I assume it is from ACGO. I have not seen it yet but am told it is easy to install and remove if not needed. It is supposed to work real well in short beans.

How much is the kit costingIJ While I understand the vaue of something inexpensive, I hate to see some piece of tubing or makeshift mounting brackets going through the rotor, Mike

Dibber- I see the picture, thanks. I think I understand what needs to be done, but I still have questions. If i don't encounter short beans(our shortest are usually at least knee high) is this a benefit. Also, if our ground works fine in the spring our drill tends to throw a 1-2" ridge that may be present at harvest. We have had problems with this causing the header to "bulldoze". This modifications looks like it might worsen the problem. Am I rightIJ Finally, the picture looks like they used flexible tubing from a sprayer held down with bolts from the guards or hold down bolts. Is this really secure enoughIJ Would PVC workIJ It would be more rigid. Thanks for the input. Mike

I haven't used the tubing myself but I am pretty sure you want it to be flexible so that it can flex with the head. The Johnson Bar that we use helps keep the dirt off the header and the shelled beans in. It raises the stems up as it flips over the bar so the reel can reach them better. This allows you to set the reel higher so you don't have to worry about nipping off your tines. And I think it helps improve the feeding in all conditions. It will run about $20.00_ft. But it does the job, I think the tubing would probably accomplish the same thing although it might tend to leak the beans out under the tubing where the Johnson bar gives you a tight seal that holds the beans in the head.

Nope. The hose will not let any beans out once there over. I had the Johnson guard and it is now in the scrap bin awaiting a new use. For what it will get used for; I have no idea. Yet.

Bill- Are you saying the Johnson Guard would be a waste of $600 on my 30' headIJ Does the tubing work betterIJ If so what kind and type are you usingIJ What do you use for hold downs and where do you bolt it onto the headerIJ Also, do I need such a gadget if I don't have short beansIJIJIJ Thanks Mike

I ordered the kit a couple of months ago....I think I was quoted between $500-$600. I'll find out tomorrow. I'll reply back if I'm way off. This is for a 25' head.

The hose works. I used PVC cut every 2 feet and conduit clamps. It keeps short beans feeding evenly and, it also keeps tall beans feeding very evenly,no slugs no problems. Just do it. (probally does the same thing as a Johnson Bar only a lot cheaper.) Also helps to keep rocks and dirt out.
