Combines 9760 sts keeps breaking separator tines in swathed grass

In edible beans you open the concaves alot and all sorts of crap goes right through. you can actually hear rocks going through the whole machine without damaging anything. No one grows grass seed around here, interesting to hear some problems with other types of crops.

well what do you know someone talking about a sts breaking tines. get an axial flow they don't break off. unles you runa disc blade or worse into her.

Ok, on the issue of going quickly from crop to crop, that is one of ways to make the growth regulator pencil. If you get a chance, put the pencil to it one more time. I think you'll find that shortening the length of the grass straw will serve you very well in a couple of ways. It will take less dry down after swathing, getting you into yhe field a day or two earlier. And the load on the combine will be be enough lighter that the fuel and labour savings will pay for a lot of it. What would happen if you took one of your broken tines and used it for a template to build a knife setup for the front couple of rows of tines. Maybe make a mount for a sycle section to be bolted onto it. That would help with the roping effectively. If our fescue gets rained on, sometimes we will put spike bars in our axial flow to help minimize the roping. The currently produced conventional machines do a fine job in grass, but at the expense of your other rotational crops. Dont let anyone fool you. All mass produced machines on the market are a "jack of all trades, master of none" harvesters. They will do most crops ok, but will do none really well. They have to be that way to market them in a global marketplace. Unfortunaly you happened accross a machine type that has'nt had enough time in the grass seed to solve some of the problems. If you had the time to do a little experimenting with some various new accessories of your own design, you could probably make some extra cash. Everybody could use extra cash.

If the tines didn't break, a much worse problem would be encountered -- the tines are bolted to well nuts which are inserted_pressed into the rotor skin and these would pull out. CAn't post a photo on here, but if you'll email, I'll send you a photo of a possible fix -- at least it's worked well in heavy green stem soybeans. Terry Welch

Maybe the idea with a pre-determined break-point is to limit damage to more expensive and harder-to-replace partsIJ

Bulldogger; We have just have this happen to use combining in tall fescue. From what we can figure on tine broke off, broke some fingers in the separation grate, went onto the sieve, went thru the plastic fingers at the back of the top chaffer, into the returns and back through again. This time breaking or pulling out all but 3 separator tines and two rub bars on the rotor. Machine was just greenlighted, and no signs of prior cracking in tine that we deduced to be the one that broke. How has JD treated you when this has happenedIJ Have they been willing to help you ($$$$) fix this issue or have they left you on your ownIJ How often does this occur for youIJ Please either post or reply to my email adress or saptonacres@lincsat.com Your information and experience would be greatly appreciated. Andrew warranty has always fixed the combine but not the problem. It only happens with certain varieties of grass. We have never broken anything in regular crops (wheat, oats, barley, canola or beans) Other than a couple of issues we are quite happy with JD and the STS combines.
