Combines Adjustable Pre Cleaners on Deere STS Combines

I wouldn't be without it - but if your only doing corn (for that's what it was designed for) then stay with standard. Remarkable differance in canola, wheat, rice, barley etc. etc. Put a loewen one in though as the JD does not have support wires or nylon bushing on the louvre wires - they eventually get cut in halve by the vibration.

Precleaner about 12-15mm for all those. Corn open it up to about 20mm.

Yes, makes a huge difference. like me, you sound disappointed with the STS in canola - trash level that is - adjustable pre-cleaner will turn the sample black as spades.

I'll echo Rod's comments. Usually set the pre-cleaner about the same as the chaffer. Not only will the sample be cleaner, it will also increase capacity because the shoe is not getting overloaded. Having a properly set pre-cleaner will lower your returns.

Rod, I was doing canola today that tested 5.6 for moisture, pre-cleaner at 12mm as you suggested, rotor at 450, concave at 30, wind at 690, chaffer at 18, sieve at 5. The sample was far from black. I realize the very low moisture level can cause problems. What would you suggest for settings, Thanks, Jim

I know with our machine,,,sans adjustable pre cleaner,,,we set the sieve at about 3 and have a nice clean sample,,,am probably going to get an adjustable precleaner before next wheat harvest for sure

I think your fan speed is too low. From what I remember we ran the fan around 900 rpm. Our canola is usually at least 50 lbs_bu. If yours is less because it is so dry you might not be able to run it quite as fast.

This setting is for a 9650 - a 60's fan speed will be different. Rotor around 450 rpm Concave 35 plus - make sure it has been zeroed and lEVEllED! Pre-cleaner around 12mm Chaffer 16mm Sieve 3mm Fan 830-850rpm. Note: It is imperative that you actually measure the sieve_chaffer_pre-cleaner with a ruler etc. then recalibrate the indicators. You should pull both out and make sure all the louvers and rails are free from chaff_straw etc. Also make sure they close and open evenly - front to back and side to side.
