Combines Air Deflector Results

We retrofitted our machine to the crossflow fan back when they came out thinking that it would help. I wish we would have left the old fan in. The crossflow and the long shoe (which we have) both just compound the problem, in my opinion.

The first post mentioned putting stovepipe over the return hole. This is what I didn't understand. Can you expand on that dfgIJ

I have a air deflector from harvest services don't know if its quite the same you guy's are talking about. Regarding the returns I leave my bottom sieve open alot basically all the seperation is done on the air foil chaffer I have. I harvest small grains only though. In something like canola you get AlOT of mog on the chaffer.

Jeff, If you go to the top of the return elevator the grain goes through a round, horizontal auger to dump back into the rotor cage. This auger has an oval-shaped hole cut out of the top of it. As the return gets full it boils out this hole and falls down the outside of the rotor cage onto the seives to make another loop (or to go out the back of the machine on the right hand side if you overload the chaffer). If you cap that hole off the return has to go into the rotor cage where you can thresh it. We capped ours with a piece of 6" auger tube cut in half and a couple of big hose clamps.

For less money, and the right job, get the air deflector, get the chaff floating out of the combine, not riding off the back of the sieves.

Thanks for the detailed aswer guys. You have helped me understand what to look for. Every make of combine has some silly little flaw. This forrum is a tremendous benefit that we can all learn from the experience of others.

I have short shoe 1680. Had old Massey. Knew nothing about rotary. Spent winter thinking about unclean sample. Seems had Harvest Services fan throat kit.(chokes fan exit top and sides)Rigid airfoil chaffer,OEM seive. Installed air deflector. Heck, I could clean grain easier eating a can of beans!!!! Terrible, rather have the way it was (liveable)However decided to go back to beginning. Installed OEM seives from loewen, kept air deflector. (throat kit must come out first) Will Definetly let you all know!!!!! Obviusly have heard it all from all salesmen selling their product right up to custom cutter with 25 years experience-bush paddle fan and rigid airfoil-So back to square one. later.

The harvesst services fan throat kit, sounds not good. You never want to reduce the volume of air on the sieves, you want to direct it to the right place. Wind is your friend when separating grain and chaff. I agree with going back to the old paddle fan, but be sure to keep the Air Deflector form Future Farming Solutions it works!!

Not sure what wind deflector kit you guys are talking about that chokes off the wind. You certainly don't want to do that. Several after market companies have been making these wind deflectors_fan throat type kits for IH rotaries for some time hard to say what it is. I have have the "Harvest Services kit" and it directs the wind under the air foil chaffer and in a bit on the sides. The problem with IH is there gets to be a dead spot in the center of chaffer with the stock set up. No comparison to stock chaffer set up believe me I've tried it stock no thanks. All kinds of modifications and tricks back in the archives on the site hear check it out its good info.
