I would love to try growing asparagus this next season. What do I need to know about it? How much room does it take and is it easy to grow? I'd like to grow enough for our family and to sell at the market.
Are you planning on growing it from seed or plants? We have a couple of asparagus plots on our land. We don't sell it, we grow enough to eat. I'll be honest and say that we don't always get a good crop each year.
The key is to give it time. You don't always get a lot every year. It takes time and I find that it is one of the most finicky vegetables to grow. I would start from seed instead of plants.
I have tried growing asparagus and never had much luck. I wish I had tried starting with crowns instead of seeds. It might have worked out better had I taken that route. Good luck!
I recommend starting your crop with Jersey Knight crowns. Only the male plants produce asparagus spears and Jersey Knight is a predominately male hybrid. The variety is also pretty resistant to diseases.
