I tried my hand at making homemade clam chowder today. It was a major fail! The taste was good but it was so clumpy and not really the right color. We ate it, pray we don't get sick. Any idea why it would be clumpy and not creamy?

Since I do not like clams or clam chowder, I will can't advise on taste ... however, when it comes to chowders in general, it depends on how you thicken them.

It would help to know what base your chowder was - was it a while (dairy based) chowder or a red (tomato/ketchup based chowder) ?

It was a white, dairy based, base. I make gravy a lot and never have a problem with it being clumpy. It was gross to look at, like the base stuck to the potatoes.
