Combines Combine Conundrum

local dealer sold 3 CRs and they all fell flat on their face. Something in the hydraulic system went wrong and I know one of the owners had to hire custom cutters to take his crop out. He got rid of his and bought a JD 9860 STS. That was 2 years ago. I would see which dealer has the better support and service because both combines can break down.

Jo, Not a bad place to be where you are, I mean your conundrum. What brand of combine do you have nowIJ I would think both would work great for you. If I was you I would look them over real good. I think you would see that the CR is a heavy built combine and should last a long time. Someone told me that the CR's drives can take up to 600hp, now I think that is what he said. I am not sure that the STS has that much built into them. I think New Holland built the CR's from the top down, I mean started with the biggest one and then made them smaller. Not sure if John Deere didn't start with the smallest one (9650 sts) and then made them biggerIJ I say that because the 9860 looks the same as a 9650, but with more hp. I think the CR has a lot more cleaning area than the STS. I also think the CR head drive and feeder reverser is much better. The CR has a lot of standard items that you will not find on a STS. I think a CR would be a nice combine for you but then I am not the one writing the check out. I guess you know the one I would buy. There is about 5 CR's around me and all have not had any big problems. Most of the problems have been fixed by new software downloads. The John Deere STS in my area are doing good also, but I have heard of poor looking grain samples from them. Good luck on what ever you buy, Ilnh

It went to the NH dealer. I will check and see if they have one. The owner dropped NH or NH dropped him and now he is a JD dealer.

Right now we have a gutted out 8820. The mechanic hit the 10,000 dollar mark on repairs and my brother-in-law (the farmer) told his dad (the retired know-it-all who owns the thing) that he can pay to fix it himself because he's going to get a new combine. With the additional 10,00, he'll have sunk 40 grand into the 8820 this year, but that did include a new flex head. His dad would never let him get rid of the 8820 until now.

Hmmm....40 grand in a combine consisting of a new header vs quarter million for a brand new combine, not including header. How many acres are you going to harvest a year and what is your time frame to get the crop inIJ Perhaps the old "know it all" does know something and cannot justify a quarter million dollars for a smaller acreageIJ

Deerebines...I hear ya on that reply. I'll bet Mister Joker has yet to get anything without the help of Daddy. I for one, wish I had a "know it all Dad" to hang on to. So I am either going to go broke or make it, but at least I can say I'm my own man..10-4IJIJIJ
