Combines Combine Conundrum

the only major problem I have seen on the CR_CX combines are that second gear in the transmission has bearings that are a few thousandths too big for the shaft. This casues the bearings to fail and the gears will also fail if left unchecked. If looking at a new combine, there isn't much that can be done about it under warranty until it fails either so it can be a bi of a gamble. Keep in mind that these trannys are few and far between, out of the 40 that our dealership had out there are four that have failed so far. Other than that they seem to be a solid combine, all the software glitches have been solved and most of the little mechanical problems now have simple solutions. The 2005's should shape up to be an excellent machine.

I know of a few CRs that have been acting up. The first guy I know, worked for a guy that has a CR 960. He told us that the sieves would unexpectedly get out of whack in the middle of the day. I think he was talking about the "self leveling" mechanism. They had techs out there several times. It got to the point where he was threatening to not pay for it. The other CR I know of had engine problems. It was a 940, the injector lines blew off and he lost about 30 gals of fuel. Then the pipe going to the turbo broke off. He had to even get his old TR 96 from the dealers lot to combine one day cause the CR was broke down. I was talking to him the other day and he wishes they'd have bought a Deere. He said that the CR was made out of "cheap junk". His words not mine. The few 60 series Deeres that I know of in the area have ran well and the guys that have them are quite happy. I think that they can all have their "moments". Some just have more than others.

If you want a rotary combine that will hang in there, get a 2388. If you want to trade every year, get the deere.

Actually 'Daddy' has been out of the scene financially for the last ten years, except to complain everytime we bring new equipment onto the farm because it's too modern, old adage applies of 'he doesn't understand how to use it, therefore he's scared of it.' And as for acreage it's 3000 acres in about a month and a half with only one combine to do it. With the 8820 running full speed, we still hired out at least half of the harvest to custom combiners. There's no question that there needs to be a new combine, just what kind. The 8820 has 5000 hours on it (estimate) And the best way to describe what all is wrong with it it to say, if you stand in the front right now, you can look all the way through the machine and out the back.

Forgot to add, the only reason the combine has stayed on the farm this long is sheer respect for the father. This is the case with most of the long suffering equipment on the farm, but with the costantly growing number of acres being farmed, we're finally going ahead with new equipment, to keep up with the demand.

Perhaps father wants you to consider used though. I guarantee you, "NEW" , isn't keeping up with demand except the demand a dealer wants or Deere to keep pushing pretty paint out the door. I'll bet another 8820 or a good 9600 and the current one you have rebuilt would cut alot more than a new 60 series and alot less money invested as well. If help is the problem, figure out what your going to pay over the years in interest. I think you'll find you can afford harvest help cheaper to run a cheaper machine. Then again......guess you can do what you want, Ultimately it is your money. Just remember, once your broke and belly up it's d@mn hard to get back on your feet. As my old man told me once when I was a dumb kid..............when it's gone, it's gone. Good luck

How did this dealer go from a New Holland dealer to a Deere dealerIJ You don't just wake up one morning with a pocket full of cash (or investors) and decide the you want to be the John Deere dealer that you always dreamed of, Deere doesn't permit it, you have to be "groomed" to become a dealer. Bascially, Deere comes to you, you don't go to them. Truely a privilege, not opportunity.
