Combines combine wreck

The same thing happened to me a couple of years ago. luckily I was working on my home farm when it happened. I had finished up a field and was heading up the drive to the where my truck was parked with a full tank of grain on the machine. This kid that helps me was shredding stalks in the field across the road and saw the rear wheel on the combine flopping around, he stopped and jumped out of the cab of the tractor and started running across the field waving his arms. I knew something was up and stopped the combine. There was only one lug left holding the right rear wheel on, and it had partially broken the center out loose from the rim. I never felt any vibrations or anything to know something was wrong. I don't know how long the lugs had been loose, but the day before I had finished up working on my uncle's place 18 miles away, and had brought the machine home on a busy 4 lane highway that crosses has a 2 mile long bridge over a river. If I had lost that wheel on that bridge that combine would have crashed through the guardrail and I would have gone in the drink for sure. I put all of the lug bolts back on with locktite, and check them everytime I put the combine on the road.

Had he ever been running tracks on itIJ This guy I know used to farm a bunch of crayfish land back in the 70s before they came out with rear assist for combines, and he had those metal tracks that fit over the tires on his 4400. The frame on that thing cracked in several places, and one of the final drives broke loose from it in the middle of a field.

Well I have never been impressed with the ruggedness of the frame on my 4400. I was cutting wheat 4 or 5 years ago with it, and every time I pulled back on the lever to slow the machine down to turn I kept hearing this clunking sound. I got out and checked to see that was going on, and the variable speed drive was hitting the tailings elevator. Where it bolts onto the frame the metal had just cracked from metal fatigue and the variable speed drive was about to fall off. I welded it back on, and re-enforced it with a piece of angle iron, and it has never been a problem since. The little triangular brace where the back end hooks on cracked on both sides of my combine, and had to be replaced. The adjustable rear axle also cracked at the top on both ends. My machine is not a junker that has been abused either, I know the guy who had it before I got it, and it was owner operated and well maintained, I have always run it myself and kept it up as well. It is more than 20 years old but, if I pulled it out and turned the pressure washer on it, it would look brand new.

I could have gotten back in and driven up to the top, hooked up my header and kept going if it was my New Holland. No, I'm just kidding, Thank the lord he wasn't killed or even worse.
