Cover crop yea or nay?

I don't usually till my soil at all, but I'm going to do it this spring. Do you think I should till it now and plant a cover crop to benefit the soil or would it be better to just wait until spring and till it then. Basically, are cover crops truly useful or are they overrated when it comes to improving the soil?

My neighbor plants clover as a cover crop. He tells me it helps with weed control and that means he doesn't need to use herbicides. I'm going to do it next year. It's too busy this time of year for me to start.

There are many advantages of a cover crop, including the reduction of soil loss through erosion, an increase of soil organic matter, and more moisture and nutrient holding capacity for plant growth. Which cover crops do you have in mind?

Yes, we do a cover crop. We too use clover. My grandparents did this and it's just been passed down. It is supposed to be good for the soil and it keeps the weeds out.
