In your area, is it mandatory to have flood insurance, or just a really good idea? I know most people only get it if the chance of flooding is over 50% based on the weather history of their region.

It's only mandatory in Wisconsin if you live in a flood plain. Illinois is the same I believe. Even if you don't, it's a good idea. Storm systems coming in from the Rockies can be brutal.

It's mandatory where I live. I'm in a flood zone area so it's mandatory. We haven't had any problems yet (knock on wood). Our insurance is pretty high because of it.

It is not mandatory to have flood insurance where I am. However, we do have it. My childhood home flooded when I was a teen, and I remember what a headache it was for my parents who didn't have flood insurance.
