Gleaner fan, your right. It may have been an improvement put on the later serial numbered machines. Although they had the new improvement of the upper pipe on the feeder house for hook-up, the older headers still had the older style 2 pin (one upper and one lower) attachment. So, until you traded up headers or attached the adjustable cast iron hooks on your old headers, you could attach headers the old way. My 1968 gleaner EIII combine serial number 27674 has both setups on it and the 1967 brochure for the EIII shows it that way for hooking up to an older header that still has the 2 pin brackets on it.

On the model E gleaner, it did not have any pipe mounted on the top of the feeder house. It contained the slots on the side of the feeder house, both top and bottom. Both sets of slots then contained the spring loaded pins. The headers did not have the bigger cast iron adjustable hooks on the top of frame. Instead, they had 2 sets of the smaller cast iron hooks (2 near the top - 1 on each side and 2 near the bottom - 1 on each side) that fit into the slots on the feeder house where the spring loaded pins could then be wedge into them. In the newer design with the pipe on the feeder house of the combine and bigger cast iron hooks on top of the header frame, there was no need for the upper set of smaller cast iron hooks on the header, so they did away with them. But, the lower smaller cast iron hooks were still used with the wedge pin to secure the header. Basically, it made hooking it up a one time effort to get down from the combine and wedge pins into just one set of lower hooks. Where as with the older setup, you had to get it just right to do it one time. Most times you wedged one set of pins, then raised or lower the head and wedged the other set.

Thanks for the info ewbeye! I knew there were other EIII fans out there. My 1968 EIII is serial E-25901. It has the 10 ft dummy platform and 8 ft sund pickup(dual belts). I bought a 13 ft. straight cut head with bat reels couple of years ago. I think this head is off a K. I had to do a little "changing" on the throat area to make the connection. The four cast wedge hooks were the same though. Also had to convert the drive pulley to chain drive sprocket. Thought it might be an interesting project to convert the head to a flex cutting bar system for soys sometime. Never combined beans before! Any chance you could scan and email that EIII brochureIJ Just one more piece to the history. Thanks. Carry on!!
