I just thought I would share a site (Which I have no affiliation with whatsoever) That is the most informative I have ever seen on a basic level.

I think it's important to know as much about your house and other buildings as you can.

It looks useful because they use plain words and lay things out so that the concepts are easy to understand and follow. I especially like troubleshooting section. I'm still going to stick with paying the pros, but at least I'll know what they're talking about now.
