Combines Getting soybeans up the feederhouse

Is your head feeding evenIJ We run an R-72 with 30 flex as well. Never plugged yet. If your head is not feeding even I would recommend a Johnson rock guard_grain saver or Crary Air Reel. Both work. We have run the chain in both positions. I was thinking that the float position would actually be better for that. Good luck,

We just have the factory pickup fingers. Sometimes you do see some bunching going on in front of the auger. I was thinking of adding the 3" suction hose behind the sickle like in the "tips" topics. Think this would helpIJ Don't really want to spend the money on an air reel, but I'm sure that it would be nice.

A couple of things: do you have the feeder drum shock absorbersIJ They would allow that rear feeder drum to "float" at the level of incoming crop instead of the drum dropping back down all the time. Also, since this is happening in beans, you may have a dirt buildup problem on the feederhouse floor between the feeder chains that is causing the crop to want to backfeed down the front chain. If this is the case, you may want to do some adjusting on your head to keep it from scooping up dirt. Just some ideas-

Thanks Tom, yes I do have to shock absorbers. I will check for the dirt buildup. Is there any way to reduce the space between the drums so that the rear chain could pick up the crop fasterIJ Just a thought

A Johnson rockguard_grain saver is a metal strip about 3" high that attaches just behind the sickle. It creates a "pinch" point for the reel to keep soybeans from building up and entering the feederhouse in bunches. Note, also does a good job of keeping rocks and dirt out of head. Its the darndest looking thing that you would swear looks like soybeans would never be able to get over it with out tearing off lots of pods. However, that doesn't seem to be the case. Some operators are using pvc pipe or suction hose to try to do the same thing. Many seem to be making that work well too. The Johnson rock guard comes in one foot sections and is designed to allow normal flex of the head with the use of bushings in every joint (every foot). They list for $20_foot. I know many who have made their own or use the pvc pipe trick. We used one last season on our 530. It worked great. However, we did get an air reel for this season. Note, we purchased the Air Reel because the previous owner of the head had all but destroyed the Gleaner reel. After running an Air Reel for 12 seasons on our 320 we felt that purchasing a Crary Air Reel would be a better investment than one from Gleaner. Crary is a company that AGCO should buy and then make Air Reels standard equipment. We still have the Rock guard around. Would let it go for about half of new. We bought our rock quard from our AGCO dealer.

Kurt, Got thinking that nearly every time that I've seen a feeder house get plugged from uneven feeding it plugs the front chain not the back. Does that make senseIJ Do others find that the caseIJ I can't figure out why the rear chain plugs. Is it because the rear chain isn't "keeping up" with the front oneIJ And if so whyIJ Something would have to be "wrong" in the transistion area between the chains or the cylinder isn't taking the material away from the rear chain fast enough. That slip clutch should last 20 years, not one. Wish I could be of more help! There are some guys on this site though that seem to have a good answer for every problem. I'm sure they will give you some good leads. Brian

As Tom l mentioned, dirt between the front and rear chains has been the only trouble I have had. For some unknown reason, dirt seems to stick to the bottom and will never clear out until you get in there and remove it. Tom Russell

It sounds wierd but make sure you have the tin strips that narrow the header throat up about three inchs on each side of the opening. I had the same thing happen to me put them in and had no more trouble
