Combines Harvesting Canola

Its possible, but its difficult and slow, with a high risk of large shatter losses I dont intend to do it again.

I've driven combines close to a farmer who direct-cuts his canola. They spray it with a chemical called Gramoxone, which causes the plants to wither and go yellowish-brown. They then cut it with wheat-headers.

Swath if possible. It is hard to get it to feed into the header and it shatters very easy when ripe. And it has to be at about 8% moisture to keep. Easy to thresh and most of the MOG will end up on the shoe, especially if you have a rotary combine. You'll need open up the sieves and use air to separate the seeds and chaff. Can't screen it out.

it is weary easy if you are using header extension. The idea is that your knife must be min 3' away from auger (more is better) co your canola must fall on the bottom of header not on the auger. And vertical side knife of cause. This is all you need.

I would swath it if at all possible. We straight cut a couple of acres a few years back, it can be done, but its just so slow and if a wind were to get up you'd run the risk of having some serious losses.

lloydminister has a fancy web site. Maybe you can find something of value there or a good lead.

I run the concaves as wide as possible to increase capacity. However, don't get too excited and open too much. Because if you plug the crop has nowhere to go. I run the rotor at 500 rpm in low gear. I run with an air foil chaffer. Run the bottom sieve just barely open. Fan speed is the real question. I have ran at as low as 400 and as high as 550. I look at the sample and make my decision then. I look to combine canola a little on the dirty side, a few pods and small stalks. Hope this helps.
