Bee keepers. What forage varieties are people planting for honey bees?

I don't keep bees anymore but when I did I never planted anything. but I live out in the country, I will say that one year the field in front of me had firewheels and they made the best honey. A funny thing happened one year, we didn't get the rains we normally get and there was a shortage of flowering plants when I robed the honey that year is was almost black in color, and had a funky taste, when I had others try it someone said it tasted like molasses then I light came on----they were hitting the cattle lick tubs

The first thing that comes up here is clover and the blossoms attract bees like crazy, so I usually leave a portion of it alone until the other flowers start coming up.

Funky tasting black honey can also come from Buckwheat.

This time of year, the trees are main source of pollen.

I recently found out that bees can cover 2,000 acres of terrain to collect necessities like water, nectar, and pollen. It would help to visit an old field or natural spot abuzz with bees, to know the native plants that thrive in your location.
