How accurate are rain gauges? I have two placed in the open on two parts of the property, and they are regularly an inch off from each other after it rains.
I have a stand-alone manual rain gauge though I have heard that Rainwise tipping bucket gauges have better accuracy. In the case of the former, those that have a 4-inch diameter opening at the top give more accurate results.
You can check on Amazon or E-Bay for prices. But for me, I bought a square Tupperware container and marked the inches off by a ruler. The opening is 5 or 6 inches wide so it's accurate enough.
We just have a standard rain gauge on our fence, but I know they are not the most accurate. The most accurate type seems to be the weighing rain gauge. It can measure different types of precipitation, such as rain, snow, and hail. They are more expensive, though, and require more maintenance than other types. We are okay with our standard rain gauge here.
