How Do Smudge Pots Work

How do smudge pots work? I'm wondering if I can make my own to protect larger trees from ice building up on them. Will it work? Have you tried it?

If there is wind you might need more than normal. The whole idea is for the smoke to just hover over everything. Un-insulated greenhouses are where they work the best.

Boy, you learn something new every day. I've never heard of smudge pots until you mentioned them, Lincoln, but I googled and it's an interesting concept. To me, it sounds like it's bad for the environment and I wonder if it could catch fire. I hope you'll let us know if you make one. I'd love to hear how it turned out.
