Can't stop for a leak. If you do the math...If they average 7 mph X 40' X 5280' X 24hrs. divided by 43560(sq.'_acre) gives you 814 acres. That means they can not stop for a leak for 24 hour, and have to unload on the go for 24 hours. Hard to believe even in light wheat. And if they are going any faster, and the wheat is real light, it should have been worked under in the first place.

Bigsky i dont think you could have put it any better then that. I wanted to sit down and calibrate all that out but no need to now. Also in your figures the fields would have to be at least 2400 acres for the 3 combines to cut 800 acres each, because I dont think you would have any time to move to another field if one cant even stop to take a leak. If I could cut like that I would only have to cut for 1 week on the wheat harvest then I could make my combine payments then be back home to keep momma happy. Well good luck and take care.........

Bigsky, third gear is around the 11mph mark which they were doing and the wheat was going between 6 to 8 bags(18 to 24 bushells) per acre.Plus one paddocck was 5000 acres.john

On paper.........I can see it done, but running at 10-11 miles _hour would be hard on the header or front. Fields would have to be flat, smooth. Operators would really have to be sharp for the full 24 hours, especially unloading on the go with 42 ft. headers. I know that on our 36' header that we had on a Deere you only had a couple of feet clearance, and you dared not misjudge, or the side of the header would be kisssing the tractor or grain cart. With a 42 ft._ I believe it is to one side, but the unloading auger on the Gleaners are short.(Is this the turret augers) What ever, like I said .....it will work on paper, but I have my doubts. Have a good one.

G'Day BigSky I'm sorry to say Bigsky but I quite Believe JB and Nico You have to see the type of Country these boy's are in! It's Flat like Red River Valley North Dakota, And Big like last Chance Colorado. Some of the Guy's I know up in South Western N.S.W. Have 14000 Acres of Wheat in Two (2) Paddocks!!!! Now I worked out that you would only need to Average a bit over 7 MPH But in those light crop's (Sorry JB!!!) you could Easily tick along at 9 to 10 MPH!!! The conditions are usually very dry in Mid N.S.W. So the Wheat straw is very Dry! I know I can get along in a 3 tonne (45-50 Bushel_Acre) wheat crop down were I am at around 4-5 MPH and that is with a 94 R62 30 ft front!!! now A 2000 R 72 is 26% more powerful So I would Expect it to at least that much more productive, then you have the larger front's which I have found to be much more efficient than the standard 30 ft front (like most things Wider slower is Better!!!). Finally last but not least! I don't usually get in to these type of Debates but With our old N7 back in the Mid Eighties when My father and Uncle were in Partnership They Were doing some Contracting up North of Me and They were harvesting a 50 Bushel_acre crop of thin but dead clean crop of wheat at 11 MPH!!! with a 30 ft! front, Dad Had to back off a bit as he was haven some trouble with the Bat reel giving him to much flicker!!!! (The farmer also had some trouble with him going at the speed but he could not find any grain out the back). The best day dad had with the N7 was 430 tonne in 10 Hours Delivered to local Silo 22 km away with two Trucks!! Now that was a lot in those days!!!! Sorry BigSky I have some trouble Believing Some of the guy's on the other Color sites to! But I have to take the good with the bad and Realize that there are some guy's out there that love to get the most out of there headers and they are the guy's that Really know how to make a Header Talk!! Hate to let the air out of the sail but my wife and I can cut around 70 acres of wheat a day with the old l3. I tend to get out after unloading every other time and stretch take a leak yell at the kids for racing 4 wheelers (sometimes I get talked into race) to close to the combine...Oh yeah! eat a snack, play with Momma. Then when the sun starts to go down we shut down and head to town to eat out. I know, I know it is hard to believe we can get that much done in one day but it is true. Next year we have a goal of 75 acres_day. Wish us luck.

marshall,it sounds a great way to do a harvest (no stress) but as a contractor the farmer wants his crop off fast, like yesterday and the combine has to get paid for. Where one combine is at the moment neighbours have lost crop in the last two weeks because of bad storms so it is go go go when you can. john.
