What is the best way to go about how to plow a field when it's an odd shape? Do you wing it or make a plan in advance?

Kinda depends on the soil and drainage and the month, I mostly go with my gut feelings but there were time I needed another tractor get unstuck.

Plow as many long rows as possible. Leave turn around area on each end until long rows done. One or 2 passes (turnrows) around outside to blend area together.
Same deal when planting. Harvest the turnrows first to make room to turn around, i.e. 'Opening the field'
