How To Thaw A Frozen Pipe Underground

What is the best way how to thaw a frozen pipe underground? Is there something I can pour in it that will thaw it without doing damage to the pipe?

Do you have some idea how many feet might be frozen first?

I'm assuming this is a water pipe? If you have access, start with cold water. Hot water might damage it. You don't want the temperature difference to be too much

What kind of pipe ... galvanize, PVC. copper? What size pipe? How deep is the pipe?
