Knee high beans sounds tall to me. We have 8 inch tall beans to cut. When cutting that short of beans they do not make it over the hose no matter how fast you drive so I am not sure the hose works in realy short beans. I am not to sold on the hose idea yet.

The height I'm referring to is soybeans between 14" to 18" tall on 7" drill row spacing.

Have you tried the hose mod idea. With the reel turning I don't see how the beans can fall back out. We've run our machine for two years with the hose mod and never ran beans over because of it. Also when you raise the header up at the end of the field the beans stay on the head rather than fall back in the field. Curt

I have the same set up as you. Prior to this year I ran reel sweeps. This year I put on the 3.5" od hose and took the reel sweeps off. This worked okay till the stalks started to get damp in the evening. I am now running hose mod and reel sweeps, I have no problem feeding when it starts to get damp. I think an ideal setup is an air reel. Randy (hose mod keeps the stones out)

Turbo, I too have cut some short beans which were about 11 inches tall and they seemed to fall over the hose just fine but I only used two inch OD hose.

Those are tall bean compared to some we run into each year! Set your reel low enough that it nearly sweeps the hose with the head in lowered position. Try to run header height control in lowest position if possible - we have our reel set so it nearly touches the hose in this position. Even if we run in Med. or High, there aren't any beans that fall off the front no matter how slow you go. I highly reccomend the hose - it has made cutting beans a dream for us! Good luck, Tom langan

In 2001 soys in this area (Southern Ontario , Canada) were severely affected by both drought and aphids and most were only 8" to 12" tall and yielded only 12 bushels per acre. I put the 3" hose mod on my 318 header on my R52 and set the reel as low as possible and did a great job without the cost of an air reel. This year we don't need the hose, the beans are taller but drought made them shorter thatn we would like so we added 3_8 Anhydrous hose to about 1_3 of the p_u fingers on the reel. They just slip over the tapered p_u fingers and secured with a dab of glue, non have come off. We aimed to extend the fingers by about 3 inches, and if it turns out to be too much, the knife cures this excess. Really helps on shorter than normal beans and doesn't accumulate all the trash behind it that the hose does. Just a suggestion. Dave

The beans are so short they just lay on the front side of the hose (3.25 inches) and then start dribbling of the front. with out the hose they pile up back further and finaly get kicked in before falling of the front. No they ndo not feed well. I guess the only answer for a gleaner header is a $8000.00 air reel.
