A John Deere 6030 is by far the best pulling two wheeled drive tractor made. This thing has some awesome lugging power when the throttle is cracked open. I live in rice country and the 6030 will pull what ever a 8630 or 8640 will pull on dry ground. It has the pulling power of the four wheeled drive and the simplicity to work on featured in a two wheeler. Go ahead and get the "dang thang", cause it will hang. TSTAR over and out

My dad thinks I have gone insane! he told me I had better get a Texas oil well to supply the 6030 with fuel. Anyway I went over there this morning and checked it out. It does not have any water in the oil. There is a bucket on top of the exhaust pipe so the engine and turbo should be ok unless it is blown, or stuck from sitting so long. Apparrently it was towed to where it is sitting beside the road, because ther is a big log chain with a clevis still wrapped around the axle. The tractor has cast offset dual wheels, and three hydralic remotes, I looked in the old shed on the farm, but I could not find the cab doors, so they are probably gone. I am thinking of getting a highschool buddy of mine to tow it the fifteen miles to my place with his big Kenworth wrecker. I am going to put it in the shop and see if I can get it running. If it runs good, I am going to give it a new tires, and a paint job and use it. If not I am going to get rid of it. The way i got it for nothing is that a friend of mine who is in commercial realestate bought this farm that near town for development, and he called to see if knew anyone who would haul it away. I told him I would haul it away. He said that if you can get anything out of it its yours. I figure it is worth something as parts even if it is a bomb. Who manufactured the cabs for the old JD tractorsIJ This one does not have the internal roll gard, and it also does not have the A_C cooling fan that sticks up on top. it just has a flat yellow roof, but it did have heat and A_C.

VAFarmboy, you oughtta see if you can get it running and even use it this spring before sinking anymore money in it than necessary. I recently bought a JD 8630 for $8000. Some of the neighbors laughed, but I have found that the tranny has been rebuilt. Eventhough the tractor looks a little rough on the outside and needs a few tires, I figured I would run it for a year and see what happens. It works fine, then I can paint it and gets some tires. Remember, paint doesn't make it pull any better!

Don't worry about the neighbors laughing at your $8,000 rough looking 8630. It probably pulls just as good as their $80,000 8310, maybe better! I have never worried about what my neighbors think of my farming operation anyway. They all run brand new equipment, and have huge loans at the bank. One or two bad years, and several of them are going to be broke. I run my old equipment from the 50s 60s, and 70s, and I net more dollars off of an acre than they do, because all of my equipment is paid for. I know they will chuckle when they drive by in the cab of their brand new 8310s, and see me running an old rebuilt 6030, that I dragged out of a briar thicket but who cares what they think, my horsepower will be a lot cheaper than theirs.

VAfarmboy, I live in Emporia VA and I think I know this 6030 you are talking about. Is this the tractor sitting next to old Hwy 301 East of Petersburg just up the road from Goofus's store where the guy has an old JD 95 combine and a bunch of other old rusted junk sitting in in edge of the fieldIJ It sure fits the description. If it is this tractor, one of my neighbors bought it used somewhere out West and had it brought in back in 76. He ran the hell out of it and sold it to two colored guys and they also ran the hell out of it. I am sure it has a ton of hours on it. They went broke and it was sold at auction in 1990. I was at the sale, and some old colored man bought it for $2500, and I think he is the one who abandoned it. I heard from a friend of mine who tried to buy some parts off it last year that he quit using it because it has a major transmission problem that would cost thousands to fix, but the owner who no longer farms, would not sell any parts off it. Good luck, but if it is this tractor, I think you have got your work cut out for you. Neither my neighbor or those colored guys are known for keeping stuff up.
