Combines l2 Variable Speed

We have a '77 l2 with manual trans. I will try to answer any questions you have. We have only had this machine 2 years so I am not an expert by a long shot!

is the clutch on yours very grabby and hard to start smoothlyIJ Ours is a little grabby i didnt know if that was a characteristic of all of them or not. Have you ever gotten your transmission stuck in two grars at the same timeIJ Im just curious about if anyone else has experienced thisIJ thanks Brent

The clutch on ours seems to work pretty good. The only time I've had problems shifting was if you don't get the shifter lever far enough into neutral and you move the lever into the other slot, then it won't go into the gear you are trying to get. You have to get back over in the first slot and make sure you are all the way into neutral. Probably the slots are getting worn. This is a shifter problem though, not really a trans. problem. Hope this makes sense.

This machine has about 600 seperator hours on it so its not very worn. Do you like your l2 wellIJ I really enjoy operating ours its a nice machine It does very well in wheat. What crops do you use yours forIJ we also have a 76 M. thanks

We use ours mainly for soybeans and a little wheat. Don't have a corn head for it. I really like it although sometimes I wish it was a hydrostat. We have a 79 N5 that we shell all our corn with. It really likes corn but I never have been overly impressed with it on beans, especially in tough conditions. It also grinds up wheat straw too much to make good straw bales. The l2 does a good job and seems to cut about as many beans as the N5 even though it only has a 15' head compared to a 20' on the N5

I have gotten the trans on my M2 stuck in two gears before. The last time I had to get under the combine and take the shifting levers off and get it into low gear by hand!! Found out that a shifter fork was bent and bent bad. Drove the combine 2 miles to the shop in low gear. Dropped the trans, replaced the shifter fork and now no problems with shifting. Clutch is kinda jumpy but I think it is due to the linkage. The trans in the M and l series seem to be bullit-proof.

last year I got ours jammed into two grars twice and always seem to do it when im unloading because im in a hurry i think and change gears rapidly to evenly fill the truck. If youve ever unloaded stationary you definately know what its like to do it with a manual. thanks for your post! love the website

I love the l2 series they are very nice and I think that they do very well in wheat especially. there is one thing i wish that they had was a reverser on the feeder house beater. it would be handy on those 110 degree days when you slip the feeder house. I really enjoy running the machine! On your N series do you have any problems plugging the rotor or much downtime on your combineIJ Just curious. Thanks for the post

Click on the Hyper Mods box on the left and go to the conventional mods. look at the starter_reverser mounted on an l2

On the N5 we very seldom plug the rotor. You can usually tell if you are crowding it too much. If you do plug up in soybeans you can shift the rotor gearbox to low and then kick it back in gear. It will usually screw the plug on through. As far as downtime I think we have quite a bit but I think the combine was half worn out when we got it. Do you know anyone with a spare 426 engineIJ My D21 threw a rod through block so I am in need of one. I'm looking for a 3400 or 3500 engine. I may have to try to get a combine engine and make it work. Dan
