Maintaining healthy soil

Without healthy soil, there cannot be environmentally sound, profitable, and productive agricultural systems. How best can we manage or improve the quality of this critical resource? Regulation of water and air quickly comes to mind.

One of the best things that can help is just to plant something so the soil isn't bare. Bare dirt leads to erosion and the rain will quickly leach the soil.

Excessive tillage of land is harmful to soil health. During this process, more oxygen gets added to the soil resulting in the decomposition of organic matter. There have to be additions of organic matter to counter this. Failure to do so will lead to the reduction of soil health.
