I have heard of more problems with the 8820 than i have ever heard about the 9600s. Even our piece of $^andT N6 would run rings around the 8820s (if we could keep it running!!!) 9600s are awesome combines and there is no way around that. But we will never buy another gleaner because of reliability problems. P.S. N6 is long gone and I probely would own an 8820 before another one of those N6 because of the reliability problem was worse than an 8820. Merry Christmas and Happy new year to all. see ya BG

That returns system has been used on the TX series for years and it works well, it's not a Massey that's for sure. You can monitor your amount of returns from the cab and fine tune your settings. And about the 9600 being a great combine there's a lot of guys here that wish they still had their 8820's.Put a 9600 in barley and an 860 Massey properly set up will run circles around it.There's a lot of better combines out there that just aren't painted green.

N6 was practically an unbeatable combine in its day. 9700 White was only thing that would beat it. Unfortunately, as you said, the first 3 years of them were plagued with reliability problems. After that, 1982 and later models, the Ns were far more reliable with awesome performance. The R62_72 combines Gleaner has today have no rival in reliability. They are a totally different machine from the old Ns and just run and run and run. Your loss for not considering one. The 9600s were nearly as problematic as the first Ns when first introduced. The update book on them alone is about 3" thick. In this country, the 8820s are good running machines but the 9600s are plum wore out, literally, with holes worn clean through them. Even our loyal JD diehards have come to hate the 9600 and wish Deere would have stayed with the 8820. We see a lot more 9600s with more severe problems through our shops than any 8820s or even older Gleaners. Just what we've seen. That in addition to the ho-hum performance of the 9600 and its progeny relative to the rotaries and other conventionals out there make me refuse to believe that this is one of the best combines made. Then again, just my opinion. Regards.

The R series suck as bad as when the Ns came out. I have a friend that had 3 72s and now has 3 9650s because the gleaners always broke down. They were 2000 to 2001 models. And the 9600 is on of the best machines out there today and the 8820 are nothing special in my opinion. We have had absolutly no problems with it in 8 years.(knock on wood!!) But this is my opinion too.

I would certainly say that you are vastly underestimating the R series Gleaners. In my area, a custom harvester last year traded 4 9650 and 9750STS Deeres in on 4 R72 Gleaners because of the STS's poor reliability and horendous downtime. last year with the Gleaners... no major problems. Wasn't willing to go back to conventionals and many of his harvester friends run and have run Gleaners successfully for decades. Then again, this is the Claas combine page

I know coditions are different, but a man near here in the uk put 740 tonnes in a shed in a 12 hour day, my neighbour did 650 not pushing. This year has been good here but even in difficult years the 480's have been averaging over 500 tonnes a day, don't forget we have average field sizes of probably 30_40 acres and being a island very few dry nights! Mosy people have gone lexion here!

That is a lOT of grain in 12 hours. Was that in wheatIJ What was the yieldIJ What kind of seperator losses were occuringIJ I grow only milling quality wheat and the buyers are fussy about the sample quality. I strive for less than .2% dockage in the sample. If I interpolate the best we have done with my Gleaner, I come up with something around 450 tonnes in a 12 hour period. Even that amount stresses the grain hauling and handling system I have. I wonder what kind of set-up would be required to handle 750 tonnes_day. I just have a two man crew for harvest. My son operates the combine and I haul and store the grain. I think that a larger combine would require another helper on my harvest crew and another tractor and grain trailer. Then I would have capacity to add another combine and operator. It never ends, does itIJ Ed in MT PS: if you would reply to my E-mail address, I could send some pics of my harvest set-up. I would also like to see some of yours if you have any.
