Combines PTO Oil leak

I have tried my new bush on the shaft and am a bit concerned at how loose it is. It is definetly tighter than the old one, I know that it has to be a bit loose for play if there is somthing slightly out of line. Should it be able to wobble very slightlyIJ Does anyone know how thick the shaft should beIJ The shaft has a very slight groove on it I would think about 12-15 thousandths on an inch. It had only just started leaking, so I think it won't leak for a while with the new bush, but I don't fancy taking it to bits again next year!!!

Is the end of the pto shaft worn evenly where It contacts the pilot bushing IJ If not, suspect that the bevel gear is loose on the shaft inside the pto gear box. The bevel gear on my 1480 pto was loose on the shaft which set up an odd vibration that caused the shaft pilot stub to wear mostly on one side. I had to replace the gears and shaft. The mechanic that did the work explaned that the replacement gear and shaft were fitted much tighter to prevent the problem from happening again. It must have been a common problem on the early pto units,as I inspected several used units at a breaker, and they all had this odd wear problem at the end of the shaft. The fit at the bushing must not be too loose. The pto shaft only has a bearing at the hydrostat end of the shaft. On the engine side of the pto,it depends on the pilot bushing to support and locate the shaft against the considerable side load of the bevel gears in the pto gear box. There is no bearing behind the engine side pto shaft seal.

Take your new bushing back to the dealer and see if he has a new shaft to slip it on. It is a very close fit. Inspect your shaft carefully. Make sure that the bevel gear is tightly on the shaft. A new shaft was around $386 for my 1400 series, but it all went back togather super and will outlast the combine. When fitting the bevel gear to the new shaft, I put the shaft in the freezer overnight and warmed up the gear to 350 degrees in the kitchen oven. It all fell togather and fit very tight. good luck

Thanks very much for all your input. I am going to change the pto shaft and hydro shaft and pulley. I am hopeing to order parts from the US and ship them to England because prices here are disgracefull. I am sure I can get it all at half price including shipping. Would you believe my dealer wants $1224.00 for a pto shaft for a 1680!!!!!
