Combines Questions about the Harvest in 05

It means $16.00 per acre,16 cents per bushel for every bushel over 20 that the wheat yields per acre and 16 cents per bushel hauling. In 40 bushel wheat that comes out to $25.60 per acre. There will most likely be some harvesters chargeing that much but I think going rate will be more like three 15s and in some cases three 14s. When my Dad started custom harvesting in 1958 the going rate was $3.50 per acre and .05 cents for hauling. The combine cost $3500.00, diesel fuel was .15 and he told the farmers he paid me three and a half a day. That was three meals and 50 cents a day. I got three meals most days but I can't remember ever getting the 50 cents per day, but then I was only 12 years old and I thought I was the richest kid in the world to be able to drive a combine custom harvesting.

Thanx for all the replies both the negative and positives. We already have enough liability insurance on all our equipment since we do custom harvesting here and run our Semi's cross country so that's not a problem. We have come to the conclusion we're not gonna do it, would cost too much to do with only 2 combines and also got too much goin on here to leave. Thanx again. see ya'll

Man,i would like to get 3 16's, but here out in western ks (even if the wheat is 5o bpa) we will be lucky to get 14's...granted bigger fields and better cutting, but it is gonna be awful hard to make ends meet...good luck to us all...if it was easy we wouldn't do it...and as stated earlier, beyond fuel insurance is getting to be a killer. beh
