Pullleeese, you've got to be kidding, rightIJ Yes, I've seen you point out All the deficiencies in anything that isn't red, but when it comes to anything else (especially green),there are very few, if any, positive things according to you. You're obviously so biased you can't see it, but anyone else can. As I said in my previous post, I've run several colors over a 30+ year period, you sound as though you may not be old enough to have enough experience yet, but in time you'll learn.

newguy is right about opportunity costs. Who ever was talking about the present value of a future payment (the higher value at trade-in),it looks like this. $14,000 today is worth $14,000. The supposed $14,000 in five years (using a 5% interest rate-this represents what one could get with the money if it was not used in the purchase(opportunity cost)) present value = 14,000_(1+.05)^5 which (if my math is right) = about $10,969. Wow that looks to me like I would rather take the $14,000 today. Isn't it amazing when you can apply a little economic concept to these argumentsIJIJ

Chads: I dont mind talking to NewGuy but you no way go to econ and finance 101 then try and make sense. You just post opinions..."the future value of money has nothing to do with interest rates but it does have to do with inflation" lOl You dont even understand what he and I are discussing...the cost of money. FYI Chads: the future and present value of money directly corilates to the FED Reserves overnight lending rate which in turn is used as a tool to control such things as inflation. Go ahead and conserve the capital you have, using it "wisely" is a much better idea. It isnt an agrument about how to make me or anybody feel better about more expensive equipment, I buy what I need not what some salesmen convinvces me I need. Yep we have a long green line on our farm does everybody else nope. Are we successful because of the green paint nope. We just run a business thats all and just so happens that farming is what generates the income and expenses.

The point is, it's an arbitrary number you pick to make the calculations. Often you use the interest rate of a comparable investment rather than the interest rate on a piece of equipment to determine the alternative use. This is normally true when you're using internal capital. You may also use long term inflation rates fof figuring on longer term capital investments, but not generally so on machinery. $14,000 today, is still worth more than $14,000 in the future, no matter how you figure it.

Of course I'm biased, I never said I wasn't. Everyone on these boards is biased, if you don't think so, then you need to look around a little harder. The only reason my bias shows through so is that the traditional opinions on nearly all of these forums is "just buy the greene one." I quit going to Ag online for a long time because of that. We've had lots of different equipment over the years, even pondered the purchase of a 4020 once, but lately it's all gravitated one way. Maybe it's because my local greene dealer has tried to abuse me one too many times. Will circumstances changeIJ Probably, in some cases they already are. Chads

Yes all good points, I believe we have argued this long enough. In a round about way we are talking about the same thing. NewGuy said he was going to take the 14M and buy beer with it, one would think that he would have enough to share with usIJ

Not at the owners expence at all. And it was not the cranks... it was the bearings (recall). They did it to our 92 9500. Get it right. And what good points did "FR" have. Other than to stir $hit. Notice how he stayed away from CXs, TXs, and lexions. I don't care what kind of combine, or tractor, or implement, you have, or if you drive a Ford or a Chev. But alot of guys just like to take cheap shots at JDs. I said to "FR", that they all have a place, rotories and conventionals,(not rotories and JDs),but he still continued his uneducated comments.

Give me any colour combine and I'll find something wrong with it, but I'll also find something I like about it as well. I personally dislike all the moving parts of the Deere STS, but am impressed with thier serice. I dislike Gleaners narrow feederhouse, but the accelerator rolls and simplicity and a plus. CaseIH has an excellent track-record with thier 23XX rotaries, but an uncertain future and poor dealer representation in our region sways me away from them. New Holland and Massey are NOT well represented in my region for service, and CAT isn't available at all, period. Perhaps I'm hard to please. ;-)

The specific combine I was looking at was a 9600, and it was getting the treatment, which included rebalanced cranks. The bill for that felow was over $19,000 on a 900 hr machine! Chads
