Combines So long Daschle

How long and how much do you want to subsidies farming and ranchingIJ Is the custom harvester going to get some, tooIJ Or how about the COOPs, the fuel guys, etc... Everybody is hurt in bad years. How do you want to pay for the ever growing subsidiesIJ More than half of our income is taxed away already. Back in the early thirties corporate farming got outlawed in Kansas. Then the drought hit and the family farms couldn't survive and were crying for the government. The corporate guys could have survived without subsidies. Now it has ballooned into this huge bureaucracy with ever increasing appetite for tax dollars. When do we realize, that with each cry for government money, we shoot ourselves in the foot. This money has to come from somewhere. Have you ever asked yourself the question why the USA went from a country of hunters (the Indians mainly) to the n1 economic power in the world in much less than 200 yearsIJ It is because people could do business the way they wanted without any government restriction. Now we have all this bureaucracy and wonder why the economy is slowing. Just look to Europe. Their laws and red tape is much worse and Germany is waiting for the economy to recover since 1980, without ever learning anything. Their cities, counties, states and the feds are all broke. The government controlled health insurance and social security is broke. Why do so many people in the US think, we have to follow this wrong pathIJ Daschle was the biggest obstructionist in DC. Has anyone ever accomplished anything by not doing anythingIJ He doesn't even understand the US constitution. It does not take 60 senate votes to approve a judge. Just as there is no separation between church and state. Neither the word "church" nor "state" nor "separation" does exist in the first amendment. Further more is any kind of federal subsidizing unconstitutional. The power given to the federal government by the constitution is very limited. Most of the US departments are unconstitutional. But who reads or even obeys this old document anymore, that made this nation so greatIJ

don't know much about Daschle, from louisiana I'll let you boy's elect you politicians. but my comment to you is how can you say that during a drought or any other act of nature or market collapse that a corporate farm would not need any help to survive, it seems like you would be good at writing political advertisements no matter corperate or family farm it takes x amount of money per ac to turn a profit granted larger family farms or large corperate farm are more efficient but during droughts and depressed market prices these conditions presisted over a long period of time and are here still. corperations would have bailed they are bean counters an don't know loyalty, they want profits maybe what you are suggesting is that the corperate farms would have survived long enough for the family farm to fold and disappear and with only the few corperate farms with the best land controlling the production and supply, I see your point sounds to me like you work in an office, maybe a briefcase in hand 401k summer home on the coast. I don't like goverment involvement,I don't have the answers on how to get rid of subsidies but I do know corperate farming is not the answer!!! Oh by the way about taxes evidently you don't recieve subsidies because you would know you recieve 1099 from CCC on all subsidies and pay taxes it's welfare you don't pay taxes on!!!!

No, I am not working in an office. I am a custom harvester, that doesn't get any subsisies and no benefits. If you try to compare nowdays corporate farms to my argument, you're right, it won't work, because they're already tight up in the subsidy and red tape jungle. This was messed up in the early thirties when Roosevelt started his "new deal". If we had an unrestricted market corporate farms would simply cut production, when the prices go too low. GM doesn't get subsidies for its automobiles. They have to cut production, when the market shrinks. I grew up on a family farm for most of my life. But if I had a choice, I much rather choose freedom over subsidies and red tape. I don't know what a 1099 from CCC is. But how do you think welfare gets paiedIJ Even if you don't pay income tax, because you din't make anything, you still pay property tax, sales tax, fuel tax, etc... The n1 reason for the income tax is so the government can look into anybodies business and privacy. The number of government workers per citizen has increased over one hundred times since Washington was president. How much can you increase this burden on the economy, before it collapsesIJ Rom broke down for the same reason, it was never conquered, just like the Sovjet Union.

Getting rid of Daschle is proof the South Dakota voters are smart. The United States was founded on the premise on a free, open, and competive society with no special priveliges for certain classes (read subsidies and trade protectionism). These principles as championed by Washington, Jefferson, etc have served the United States well and has allowed it to grow to the most powerful nation in the world in a scant 200 years. Contrast that to continental Europe where trade protectionism and subsidies have hamstrung their economic performance for decades. Do we want the United States to wither and die from the uncompetitiveness that results from trade protectionism and subsidiesIJ Canada has suffered from trade protectionism and subsidies also. Now Canada is eliminating subsidies as fast as possible and it is a good thing. What gives me the right as a farmer to expect handouts (subsidies) from city peopleIJ No wonder city people refer to farmers as welfare bums. lets get rid of subsidies and trade protectionism on both sides of the border and let free open competition reign. In the end who benefits from subsidies in the US and CanadaIJ It is the land owners and not the farmers. The higher the subsidies the higher the rent and land values. You have 30 dollars an acre land renting for 100 to 150 dollars an acre and the entire subsidy went to the landlord. Ever heard of a treadmillIJ It's time for us all to follow the lead of New Zealand and Australia where all subsidies have essentially been wiped out. Note that subsidies consist of all forms of help by the government to farmers. They include set aside payments, help from USDA, free soil samples, etc, etc. One of the smartest things the US is doing now is to let it's exchange rate fall relative to other currencies. The Euro is now up at $1.29 US and the Canadian dollar is now almost 84 cents US. That makes US agricultural products more competitive on the world market. In turn this will increase the price at home for US agricultural products. There are a lot of other trade issues that could be discussed but in summing up, getting rid of Daschele is one good step in making the US more competitive on the world market and this in turn will create higher prices for US farmers at home.

when you say you don't recieve any subsidies or benifit from them if the farm you are harvesting recieves a subsidy I say you have benifited from it because without it you might not have a crop to custom harvest, you see I like your comparison of GM, profits and market share of cars had fallen years ago an what did they do they outsourced teamed up with foriegn companies moved jobs overseas, labor cost high here, product liability law suits, epa laws all these put a hugh burden on any industry in US these corperations have the resources to pickup an move,it might be better for us farmers to team up with other countries and their farmers an import grain thru us to sell here but that would cut you out of the pie! I agree with you I would much rather not deal with the Gov rather with the market, like I said before I don't have an answer on how to do away with subsidies but I would love to, I deal with rice and soybeans and I know what it cost to produce them an whether it be me or a corperate farm you will lose your a$%n without price support, even this year with supports we will still lose it if the markets don't respond, If you have an answer on how to achieve deleting price supports without an industry melt down I'm all for it but on this global scale there are not to many apples with apples comparisons.PS hope you an you farmmers had a good harvest!!!!!!!

I think the soybean market will recover even though there is a big crop. First soys are priced real low at the moment and this will attract buyers. secondly the UU dollar has fallen drastically relative to other world currencies. That makes US soybeans real competitive against Brazil soybeans for instance. So hang on to your soys for a while. If George W stays in Iraq for a little longer the US dollar will continue to fall and there will be a mad rush by world soybean buyers for US soys. That will drive up the price real quickly. Classic price demand economics

No, I don't think we can get out of subsidies without having an industry shrink. I wouldn't call it a melt down, because I expect to have something left after the shrink. But the change will come, either through decerning voters or by force of a collapse.
