Soil compost for tactile play

It's good to engage the kids in various activities that will at least minimize their gadget use. Mixing soil compost with them seems to be an ideal way of spending time because it will help them become more curious and engaged with the environment. Have you tried this yet?

I think gardening as an activity is great for kids, and I guess that does often involve mixing compost and topsoil. I usually encourage them to wear gloves though.

Would that be safe? I can't exactly put my finger on why, but it seems gross to let a child play with compost. Isn't that stuff dirty? Tactile play usually means bare hands. I suppose gardening could be seen as dirty too. I'm not sure why it feels so different to me, but it does.
