Hey there Silverblood. What oil are you usingIJ Dan Hurtt says mobil synthetic gear oil.Deals with temperature better does'nt break down. I'm on N series but i dont think 1.1 litre's of oil is enough . But dont over fill that can be bad too. Mine now has the stud holes drilled through and grade 8 bolts with nylocs on so you can see whats going on,hopefully tight but easy to see loose.Have'nt yet seen loose. It also has a plate welded in rotor side to strenghten the mounting and stop flex. Needs a temp gauge like in a truck diff. Been thinking about some how increasing oil capacity with something like a little tank tapped in there. Friend suggested something like they use on nascars _rally cars_racing cars to cool diffs and gearboxs. Apparantly little pumps ,filters and oil coolers tapped into them sounds pricey but so are them darn boxes plus down time. I'm still not convinced as to why the gearbox cant be off the cross shaft and just the top having the variator up there hanging off the rotor Case do it that way and i know they eat up belts and are hard to change etc but on the gleaner i dont think it would be that bad seeing as though you just stand next to it all. Belts might be expensive but easier to do than gearbox's. I dont buy new wheels cause the tires are worn out if you know what i meanIJ Spoiling a otherwise great machine i hope they come up with something better. Some people seem to have no problems or do they. So i want to hear what do they do for good gearbox healthIJ What oils,When to overhaulIJ. Its heavy and awkard but mines coming out every second season for a look see cause i cant handle the thousands of dollars fix bills including paying for custom work on my own crops . Working on having a spare ready to go also. Seen Case ones have trouble also. 2188's were updated,seals coming out etc so who knows. But generally seem to be reliable in that department. Have'nt seen how JD is done. I think various forms of Hyperizing helps . Taking the pressure and grinding and rubbling out of the cylinder.Reverse bars , no thanks ! What are you harvesting mainly IJ whats your rotor cylinder setupIJ. Does Agco still have four year warranty in US or is it two and you have to buy the additional two years IJ Two years Max here in Oz i think. Bye Peng.

In my opion if you run a Gleaner long enough you are going to have gear box trouble in high temp. high horsepower conditions. We have lost a gearbox five out of five years with five machines. We have tried synthetic oil and still lost a gear box. In 2001 they changed the casting material. Hope this helps. Did not have any trouble this year except with alignment (another story). Ours were all covered by warranty. I do not think there is enough oil capacity in the box or cooling for the oil. John Deere puts a oil cooler on there variable speed header drive gear box. I am sure that does not take as much horsepower as the rotor gearbox. Food for thought.

Same with us Tom, From 1990 we ran an R60 for 4 years (had the 4 year warrenty),then an R62 for 3 years, an R72 for 1 year and our current R72 for the last 3 years, about 900 seperator hours and I have never in any of these combines touched a cylinder gear box. I work really hard at getting a smooth flowing even crop into the rotor so as not to cause a lot of bunching grabing and growling. Kurt

Had a R60 then traded it for an R62 in 94 and still have it and a 98 R 72 and have never done anything to the gear boxes in a Gleaner combine since 1988.Just check the oil and drive,just lucky I guess. Illinois Gleaner

I've had no problems with the gearboxes, am on my 4th Gleaner. We run soybeans very long steady hours picking up on the go as well. But I'll inspect the seals_brgs, etc. better this year having seen these posts. Thanks to all.

We have never had a gear box go either. In fact our '87 R-60 even had a seal go out one year and we ran it for who knows how long with a very low oil level, couldn't see it any in sight glass. We think it ran at least 200 sep hours with low oil. It has quite a few hours hours now and is still going fine. We harvest only corn and soybeans, and run pretty slow cylinder speeds compared to you guys in small grains...could that be the differenceIJ I have never seen one or heard of one giving trouble at our dealer here in southern MN...maybe the cool temps make a differenceIJ Brian

We harvest mostly wheat but some beans,corn and milo. We are running 4 reverse bars but are looking to change. Agco only offers a two year warranty but are working with us on this problem.

We run are machines as hard as they will go. operated 36' headers on them this year. we normaly put 600+sep hrs. a season on them. both of our machines started using gearbox oil at around 650 sep. hrs. we kept a close eye on it but it didnt do much good. Agco is doing what they can to help.
