Combines us cattle

The information that I have heard recently is that it was a cow that was imported form Canada within the last couple of years. Maybe if they prove that it will not have the same affect that it had in Canada. But what I have a hard time with is if a cow can't get up to walk why would you take it to the slaughter plantIJ We use to be in the fat cattle business and if we had something that sick we would either doctor it to good helth or put it down. We sure wouldn't of eaten it and we wouldn't of try to pawn it off on the neighbors. Just my 2 cents worth. Kurt

There will be significant changes initiated by producers or retailers in the US cattle business, or the govt will tell us what to do. Unfortunately, the only information we hear, comes from a very biased media that wants to paint a picture of looming disaster.

I don't get this when canada had BSE every one shut them down, including the us. Now when the us has the BSE you guys figure nobody should close the border down to you . In my own opinon you should be closed down just the same as us canadians, I was listening on the news and the canadians are keeping the border open to the us with alowing certain products through. I have a friend that lives in kansas he has about 300 head nothing to big and he is laughing at me becuse my 750 head up is not worth any thing and there cattle are even with bse. He gose on to say that nobody will shut the us down that they will be up shipping world wide with in the new yr. I hope not. Now they are trying to blame us canadians for this dairy cow. I have heard reports in the news that this cow might have come from here, I have also read in papers that there is no possible way that this cow came from here. If they do pin this on the canadian farmer we all might as well get out of cattle farming, then once again the all mighty us has done the canadian farmer in.

The Des Moines Iowa Register reported today that the cow came from Canada. It was imported to Wash. state in 2001. It was part of a 74 head diary cattle move. It was also from Alberta, but not sure if linked to Canada's case as of yet. You can read article at Des Moines Register web site.

Have to agree with you about the sick cattle. If they're sick enough they can't stand up, they shoud have been put down at home. A little common sense would go a long way here.

The news report, for what its worth claimed that the cow in question was sick because of some sort of injury it sustained while giving birth to its last calve, so I'm not sure that fact that it couldnt stand was disease related. Take the report for what its worth.

i am sorry for what has happened to the canadian cattle farmer i remember telling my dad that our prices were so good because you guys up there were having such a tough time. i don't know about canada but how long have you banned the feeding of ruminant byproducts back to ruminants. in the us we have banned this since 1997. with this case in washington it could have been fead feed that came from a noncompliant feed manufacurer. when i say this i do not wish to offend any canadians out there but cattle have come across the border from canada in the past and the news has said that if this is true this cow came over in 2001 which is before this scare and before the border was shut down. you talk about the almighty us putting it to the canadian farmer and i don't know anything about that so i'll keep my mouth shut but here in kansas its kinda hard to be an american farmer as well. we feed about a 1000 head on up to fat and we have had some real tough times in the past and i hate to say that we have benefitted from your loss but it has saved a lot of the smaller feeders in my area those who hadn't just quit in the last 2 years. its not all roses south of the border either.

The Canadians should buy U.S. protein not feeding ruminant byproducts.

Tom , I have a lot of sympathy for grimreapers out look. There are many people in most countries that are prepared to work with and support the USA, but so often we get some very nasty one sided demands from Americans. Always it seems that we give and you take with nothing but some non-fullfilled sweet promises in return. Don't spit on your friends! You may need them. This is not mean't to insult my American friends but to try and tell you that how non Americans see you is very different to how you see yourselves.
