Even if we don't want to admit it, I think all of us recently have thought about how we would get along if society REALLY went south because of this virus pandemic.

So the question is: What kinds of foods could you survive on that you can plant in a garden?

There are a lot of things you can grow in the garden to make healthy meals. Cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, squash, all kinds of beans, and spinach are just a few. You can easily grow herbs to season dishes with, too, like thyme, ginger, and rosemary.

If we think positively, we have our gardening skills that a lot of people don’t. We are already quite lucky in a sense, if the worst case scenario indeed happens. I suppose the basics we have in the garden will help us survive for a period at least.

Continuing to find that out year by year in having to learn what will grow in this area and what won't (or has difficulties). Trying to find varieties of apples that are suitable for USDA zone 7 can be an interesting challenge -- and getting anything to last through August here in the local area seems to requires a large amount of stored/irrigation water most years (which can usually be collected over winter and spring months).
