Combines what would you change on an 850IJ

Hello I run a 860 which has the same cab as your 850 anyway I would change the ladder to get into the cab. and instead of having that platform before you open the door I would widen the cab and have the ladder come straight up instead of at a angle. Than you would have more room for a passenger or lunch box or to run the lever for your unloading auger. Than you would have more room to get to the left side of your combine. GS Massey had a prototype 750 with a cab that tillted forword. This was to lower the hight of the combine when you hauled it. Also it made repares on the output shaft easey. This combine is near my farm, it has 24000 hours on it. They shipped it all over the world so they could run it all year. It has some other things that were never put it prodution. Onion farmer

What is the big advantage to the triple seive shoeIJIJ On the 750 that I used to run it was very hard to get a clean sample. I only run corn, beans and wheat in our area. I constantly fought getting pods in the bin or throwing grain out the back. On the 860 I just got, I pulled the shoe and reworked it ( only one "cascade" , extended the second seive , and pushed back the lower seive ,so that it dumps into the returns section). I removed the rear chaff shaker pan over the axle. The shoe is now 76" long overall. I also closed up the gap between the top seive and the second seive . What a difference that made!!! I could then pressurize the shoe to get some cleaning accomplished. I ran a loewen air foil on the top and several combinations in the other positions. looking forward to trying this set up in wheat.

The cascade shoe was made for heavy wheat 80 + bu. Back in the 510 days out here in irigated wheat they could not do a good job. You would put wheat over the shoe. They would be geting 120 150 bu. under the circles. I have a good freind who was a custom cutter. Massey engineers would bring out a combine and run with him. One day he got the idea for the cascade shoe,he put one together and put it in one of his 510s. He did not say anything to the Massey boys. They were out running and the engineers want'ed to know why that one 510 was doing so much better. The rest is history,they put it in production as soon as posible. They also had a kit to retro fit older 510s.This man is still alive, and has owned almost 200 new Massey combines over the years. He retired in 1989.The cascade shoe will do a good job if you under stand how to set it.I know people who have done what you did and it works fine. In corn you pull out the middle sieve.Thought you would find it interesting. Onion farmer

i would change the fan on the 860 give it more capacity and run at lower revs, bigger diameter etc, make cab wider , strengthen the rear axle , better hydro make the paddles in the broad elevator an option( less bearings and shafts) they have both advantages and disadvantages ,over chains and slats my .02pesos

Thanks for the comments about the shoe. I find it interesting that a farmer came up with the idea of the cascade cleaning process. Come to think of it, the few times that I took off small grains with that 3 seive shoe it did a good job. Most of my frustration came in large seeded crops. I think the front beater that feeds the cylinder is a good idea for most crops except corn. I still wonder how many kernals get pulverized while still on the ear by that beaterIJ The 750 I ran had a paddle elevator And I thought that was one of the best things. Everyone told me how bad it was about wrapping and plugging ....I never had the first problem. The 860 I got now has a chain and slat , one time the lower rock trap came open and I ran a couple hundred feet til I noticed the light. (buzzer temporarily disconected). I noticed that some of the ears that went on the ground had kernals with the tops broken off , I'm fairly sure a paddle elevator wouldn't do that. Each design has its ups and downs I guess.

300two860 I think the paddel elevater is great. If anyone has trouble wrapping, put four paddels on each shaft. Than you can feed anything without a trouble. On newer combines it is easy,prior to silver cabs you have to change the blocks.

In Australia we recieved both English and Canadian built 510's.The English machines came with 3 sieves against the 2 on the Canadian and were far better in capacity and cleaning.The last Canadian machines came with 3 sieves and was a nice machine.The English 510's also had a slower road speed about 13mph compared to the 17 or 18 on the others.john
