I've never bothered to preserve squash because it's so easy to grow, and we eat so much of it during its harvest season that we all need a break. I don't like to waste food though, so I give a ton of it away and I feed the rest to my chickens and goats. Chickens will happily peck at a squash and I toss them in whole. I feed squash seeds to my goats because they supposedly might have deworming properties.
