burning my grass and planting lettuce with a push seeder, pictures of pests, looking for advice

I get that you're worried that what you're seeing will come over to your lettuce once you plant them. However, bugs are going to be in your yard and that's natural. Plus, all living things react to the environmental changes around them, so it doesn't necessarily mean that you need to do...

    Service light on

I believe it's a New Holland tractor; it's probably from their T4 or T5 series. @Brenda Choo, do the lights stay on when the tractor is turned on and running? I don't own the same tractor, and I'm not a mechanic, but the indicator lights appear to show that your engine oil pressure is low...

    Chips for a healthy snack

Sun-dried apples are delicious and they last ages. Squash chips are also delicious and easy to make. I've heard of people making cucumber chips, but I've never tried them.

    Rising feed prices

How have you adapted to the rising prices in livestock feed? I'm surprised at how everything has shot up. Even the producers who raise their livestock on cheap corn in feedlots have been grumbling about how expensive it's becoming.

    Delivery and shipping fees

I charge for both delivery and shipping. I'm also upfront about the fees. If people want to avoid the extra expense they can always find us at the farmers market or arrange a time to pick up their meat from the ranch.

    Improving pasture

I like to joke that I'm not necessarily into the organic lifestyle but my cattle are. I think monoculture causes the most issues. Pasture that will serve you well will have a variety of forage for your livestock. Clover is good for the soil, but it causes bloat in cattle if they eat it in...

    Thistle or no?

I can't bring myself to pay the price for thistle. If you go that route, don't mix it with the other seed or you'll wind up with a mess. The birds will sling out the millet and cracked corn for the sunflower seeds and thistle. Finches come to our feeders and we use black oil sunflower seeds...

    Age for part time helpers

16 sounds about right to me. I've had a hard time finding part-time help in the past, so I hope it goes better for you.

    Spices, rubs or marinades

Steak is delicious all by itself, but sometimes I fancy it up with a dry rub. My favorite blend is smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, and some garlic. It makes for a nice smoky flavor. @The Rutherford Family, that's one reason why I raise my own chickens. The stuff from the store doesn't cut it.

    Rebreeding Angus

At what age do you think it's best to stop rebreeding Angus? I have a some with a strong genetic line that have never had problems with gestation or calving. They also calve early which is one reason that I've kept them. They're getting older though, so I'm wondering when it's time to call it...

    Weird soil test Phosphorus results

Although beans aren't heavy feeders, corn will take up the phosphorus. However, that does seem like a big dip if your remaining fields aren't showing similar numbers and they were treated the same. How was your plant vigor and yield in 2020? Could this one test be off? It's important to take...

    Not enough pruning

Is it fixable? I've never grown grapes or really much of anything that had a specific pruning timetable. I hope it works out for you!

Quail are hiding, not eating much

Susanna, I've never raised these birds, but I believe quail are still considered more wild than tame. They aren't long-lived birds. They're game birds and rather jumpy. They're unlikely to befriend you like a goat, chicken, or pig might, so don't take it personally. They're ground birds, but...

    What's your weather like?

In my part of Texas we're experiencing big swings. It's hot, it's cold, it's rainy, it's windy, it's sunny - the weather is all over the place from one hour to the next. Or at least that's how it feels. My sinuses hate it. Some parts of Texas have seen a ton of snow. What's your weather...

    Yellowstone

It's a good show. I believe you can watch it for free on Peacock TV, @Birdie. It's a well-cast show and worth watching to the end of season 3 (where we are),@BIGRED. I'm waiting for season 4 to start.

    Streaming service with best value?

Netflix and Hulu are the best out of the three you provided. I've had Disney+ and it quickly gets old. They don't release new shows often.

    Barn floor options

That makes sense @Birdie and @RichZ. They fall in their milking parlor and it sure seems awful to them when we get them back up. I'll mention the traction thing the next time it happens.

    Cows mad

My cattle pretty much ignore all changes in weather. They hold up to the cold remarkably well. It rarely ever snows in my part of Texas though.

    Wattle fencing

I have used them like I would a chicken tractor. If you build it up high enough, it will keep the chickens in. I haven't left the chickens overnight though. I suspect that a wattle fence would do a decent job of holding baby animals as well. Maybe not goats, but it could hold lambs.

    Require vaccines?

I require that everyone have a tetanus shot. I don't require the flu shot and I don't plan to require the coronavirus vaccination. I'm not sure that I'd feel comfortable getting one myself since it's so new. I've never had anyone ask for an exemption, but this is a family run operation.
