My neighbor has dairy cows that are kept on concrete flooring a lot and I thought that might be what is causing his problem. His cows seem to fall more than they would on different flooring. Plus once their down, they usually need help getting back up. I help him with it and it's rough on the...
It sounds great on the surface, but when I checked into it years ago, there wasn't a viable market for yak meat or milk. Their hides did not fetch a premium for leather goods either. Maybe the market has improved since then though.
Remember when carrot-fed cows were supposed to take over grass-fed cows as the next big thing in beef? A diet of carrots was said to produce beef with the most perfect marbling affect and mouthfeel. Did that trend ever take off? It didn't in my area. I find the idea interesting, but I'm not...
It will be useful if it's fairly accurate. I could see suburban pet owners being interested as well since cats and small dog fall prey to coyotes. How much do you anticipate it will cost?
I'm not much for starting my own thing. It's just too time-consuming and requires unnecessary labor since established groups are already out there. And every group will have their good and bad members. With time, you learn who to trust and who to ignore.
They do establish a hierarchy of dominance, but that's usually settled fairly quickly. Is this pig showing aggression towards humans as well? If you're using one of those circular hoppers you might consider switching to a feeding trough to help with the aggression.
Holsteins are a breed of dairy cattle, but I ran into a guy who raises them on his ranch for beef. The two biggest selling points for him were the excellent marbling of the meat and the docile nature of Holsteins. What do you guys think? Is there a demand in the market for this type of meat?
It depends on the end goal really. If I was raising livestock to provide fresh meat for the table then I would probably stick with small animals like rabbits, quail, and chickens. I think they would be the easiest to slaughter and process in a backyard setting.
I'm not an HVAC specialist or anything, but anytime I've run across that sound it indicated that something was wrong with the belt. I'd go ahead and call someone to get it looked at. You don't want your heat source to fail this time of year.
Automation doesn't work as well with living things and if you think about it, crops are living things and so are livestock. Living things are unpredictable. Some of your ideas might work, but I think they'd be more expensive than what we already have going, especially the cranberry idea. I...
@RichZ, I love hearing how other farmers and ranchers manage their day-to-day operations. We're all part of the food chain together, but we all live different lives. It's so interesting to me. You should see me in the summer. I'm always worried that one of my men or women will have a heat...
Getting into ranching cost a pretty penny, but I had experience on my dad's ranch which helped a lot. Personally, I wouldn't expand right now if I was you UNLESS you know you have a direct market and a way to get your product to them. If you're going to run beef cattle, make sure there's a...
Livestock was last for me. I had structures, fences, pasture, water sources, and plenty of things planted before the cattle came. I got the cattle last actually. The chickens and goats came before the cattle. I thought I might need goat's milk if things went sideways with a calf. If you...
Everyone needs to realize that cows are amazing creatures! They get a bad rap for being the number one source of greenhouse gases worldwide in the agriculture field, but we use cows to make so many things that we can't live without. Thanks for sharing the article, @Jack L
I'm in Texas, @RichZ. I don't think I could hang in New York. I've enjoyed vacationing there, but I've heard that the snow and ice are something else all together. Do you find it difficult to raise livestock there or is it something you just adapt too as part of normal life? I've always lived...
I don't watch a lot of Netflix, but the last time I checked, all the films from the Shrek franchise were available there. They might also enjoy Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse if they haven't seen it already.
We don't usually do anything to ring in the new year around here. I'm kind of in the mood to celebrate the beginning of 2021 though. The last year has been so rough, that 2021 just feels like a new beginning. How will you celebrate it?
Yes and no. I pasture them together, sort of. The cattle are driven further out than the goats mainly because I'm a rancher. The chickens we turn out and direct them away from the gardens, but that's it. They all do great together and almost seem to ignore each other for the most part. None...
Am I the only one here who just turns all the critters out? We drive the cattle towards certain areas with our ATVs (sometimes horses),but they all go out to pasture. I'm a rancher and I can't say that I've ever had a problem with the goats or chickens bothering my cattle or vice versa. I...
