Farming for a living is not a real job it is a huge gamble involving huge amounts of risk, unreliable results, out comes which are out of your control,no assurance of stability,no benefits, vacation, retirement, long hours no overtime,You do it because you love it. No one would go to work for a company that offered the "benefits package" farming provides. So it is in that context that I say I have a real job to support my farming habit.

In one of my college classes this past weeek I was told that the additional taxes to support the farm program comes to aprox. 5 cents for every meal that every person eats. Just thought I would throw this up.

Thanks... for all your helpful advise. I will probably settle on either a 6620 or 7720 depending on what I find out there. Thanks again for everyone's help.

Well, I'd be hard pressed not to ask that professor for proof! Each year that taxes rise around here it's because they raised the mill levy for the school and it's crazy sports programs. I did pay an extra 5 cents on every dollar at a mcdonalds last winter in Denver..........dine in tax they called it. If this tax is collected at income tax time you ask him how they figured this from the food bill standpoint................Juco professors are has beens that lost thier fricken rear end in what they think they know and are trying to teach. Just be wary of what you believe without the actual figures in front of your face. Just thought I would throw that in!

Well this is an Ag Engineer profesor who mentioned this while we were jsut chatting one day. The way he figured it is took the total farm bill budget, relief for farmers, divided that into the nations population, divided by 365 and then again by three meals a day. It is just simple math, no there isn't a food tax. It is just part of every working persons federal income tax.

What I thought....he believes everything he reads instead of using some common sense. Do you honestly think those figures are factIJ The First problem with your "theory" is the fact that not a homeless person eats 3 meals a day....and while on that subject......how many of them do you know that have a mailing address so they can recieve their census papersIJ Now, then there's the farmers and townpeople as well with gardens that raise thier own food....veggies, herbs, meat, fruit......So this is costing them more to eat because they raised it themselvesIJ Final note....is the announced amount REAllY what was delivered to america's farmersIJ...or......just some b.s. figure shot off by a loudmouth politicianIJ Believe half of what you see, nothing that you hear when it comes to far fetched "simple math" as you put it and you'll be much better off..........better tell that professor to stick to the mechanics of making the machine work.....I'm still disgusted with some of the crap you "engineers" turn loose. Spend more time on the blueprints and leave the philosophy and "simple math" for those in the major.

Sorry I caused you to get your underwear in a bunch, it is just a simple comparison to put a little different perspective on it. Oh, and for engineers, would you rather farm with horsesIJ

Underwear bunches pull out.......I am just not going to sit here and let you put this crap in people's minds that it's the farmes fault that it's costing another 5 bucks per meal to keep farmers going when the simpleness of it is that theory was falsehood at it's finest. And as for farming with horses......no, of course not, but if your going to do a job why not do it right the first timeIJ In all the technology advancements and years of prototype testing and you guys still havn't vastly changed the design of a baler or combine or tractor. Just added more bells and whistles and a few more electronic gizmo's which has yet to be perfected to be protected from the elements of dust, condensation and shock vibration. The bi-rotor combine was the closest thing I have seen in years for a complete new idea that trashes the old theory of threshing and yet deere bought it and shelf'd it. Now who's scared of changeIJ Even if I can't do a job and someone else can there is no sense in them doing it half hearted......do it right and do it best or don't do it at all. Come to think of it though, if we still did farm with horses there wouldn't be any gov't programs to speak of.........you and the prof would be out of two things to do then. Remember: Bunches pull out.

The numbers he is using is the gross farm bill which of all things includes food stamps for needy people. Now is that fair to throw us into that pot alsoIJ
