Combines engines

What the heyIJ! Is this board inhabited by a bunch of 3rd graders or whatIJ I have yet to see ANY combine, even Deere, with a "cutterhead"! Sheeesh! I agree with the poster above - at least the kid is thinking. If it weren't for people with imaginations, we'd still be harvesting by hand.

Your right! At least he's thinking! I guess I got my harvesters mixed up. Forage harvesters with cutterheads and combines with seperaters. Guess I wasn't thinking! Thanks T. langan, I agree with 'people with imaginations." There are alot of them (us) out in the fields working that have some of the best workable ideas. Just using my "magination."

A lot is being said about bigger engines or maybe two. Just some info and opinions of mine from being in and around harvesters for about 25 yrs. or more...both forage harvesters(fh) and combines(cb).I know this forum is read mostly by combine guys, but please hear me out because even tho the function is different there are alot of similarities in design and components,(identical in fact).Ever wonder why the big companies that make both fh and cb now do it under one roofIJ (mind you it is a HUGE!!! roof). Years ago I think two engines were used cuz of limited power in one engine (therefore a second)or the yet to be designed or inefficent PTO in tractor and implement combos. Today the limiting power factor has changed.Sorta!!! It's still there only maybe reversed! Now the engines are there...Claas has a 500HP M-Benz in there fh this year,(limited HPIJIJIJ only for the guy who wants 550 huh!!!) But Claas has maybe the most experience (in the world) with usable HP.It has come with time and at a cost to all companys. This is where you cb guys win out. With the big power(some say HP wars) in fh's alot of testing and learning goes on here. I wonder if that's why Claas-Cat owners like the capacityIJIJ JD is learning from their fh (series 10) when big power virtually blew bearings away from the torque.(hence a new design) We all win here ...even the companies. BIG engines means BIG shafts and bearings designed as a total package

there is one other small problem, Have you seen how big the 12.5 litre block is, it smipley wont fit in the current platform. look at the european 9780 with the 8.1 blown to 365hp, there an't any room left with its cooling package and air intake coming in from all directions. Would be nice though 450hp CTS a flyer!!

We have a Detroit 60 series in a freightliner. 1994 model with 530,000 miles on it. I love it. ITs the big block 400 plus hp I like the most out of all our semi's. Every semi is different though, we have one with an N-14 that I don't really like, but I know Cummins makes good motors

The Detroit 60 series are very reliable motors. Many run over a million mile without being opened up. I have a 12.7 430_470 in my T-600 and it has plenty of power. I would'nt recommend a 11.1 because they are underpowered, unless you are just hauling a few miles. 12.7 is also very easy on fuel too.

series 60 our tottaly different than the old detroits. For what ever reason their seems to be a lot more of them out their available than with a cat. Usually they are cheaper trucks if they have the detroit. JUst check the blow buy I defentely wouldn't hesitat from buying one even though I am a cat fan.
