We are currently running 4 detroit 60 series in 99 and 2000 volvos and really like them. They have plent of power and get really good fuel mileage, they have no problem holding 70-73 mph loaded here in the south.

The Detroit 60 series has been the number one selling large truck engine for many years. The bean counters in big outfits like them because of their fuel mileage and reliabilty. Freightliner_Daimler-Chrysler owns them now and will only put Detroits and MB engines is some of their trucks which also helps the sale figures.

I bought a '95 Pete with a 430 Detroit a couple of years ago and had it turned up to 470. It has 920,000 miles and has never been opened up. It seems to have a lot of blowby, but it runs good and started up the other day when it was 5 degrees. I did have to replace the computer. Sometime ago a bolt fell in between it and the block and wore a hole through it and it had about an inch of water in it. Glad I caught it before it died. Anyway, it's a good engine.

Thanks for all the good comments, guys. I've been studying up on them, and there are a lot of innovations. The overhead cam with belt drive looks good and allowed a lot of head design changes. Do the belts stand up goodIJ Were they first with electronic injectionIJ

The 60 series came out in 1987, it was the first electronic controlled heavy duty diesel engine. I have never heard of problems with the cam belt. What size are the motors in the trucks you are looking atIJ

The size is a 12.7 430_470 hp. Apparently, when on cruise the hp will kick up when needed.

Good chioce, we used a FlD 120 to help with harvest this year with a 11.1, 320hp. loaded all it could do was 35 mph in one mile, and maybe 60 down the highway. My 430_470 will do about 65 loaded in one mile and pulls hard up to 80 where it governs out.
