According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO),about one-third of the world's food production goes to waste before people consume it. What are some of the methods farmers can use to prevent crop loss amidst the usual challenges they face?

Farmers should be able to implement proper harvest management. The method chosen should be suitable so that there is yield maximization. Knowing the exact time of harvest affects the durability, quality, and storage of harvested crops.

The movement towards eating food that is locally grown has helped with this, I think. Anything we can do to shorten the supply chain probably helps.

The challenge most farmers face is identifying the best method of averting crop losses. Some farmers have to contend with extreme drought levels in certain regions. How can they deal with high levels of salinity in their fields?

Some regions experience varying drought levels from time to time, at times, historic. High salinity levels could mean that crops don't grow as required, meaning that crops get lost at the early stages of development. In my view, the solution lies in getting suitable seeds that can withstand high levels of water salinity.

As someone already mentioned, varying climate conditions and weather conditions can be detrimental to crops. A fix for this is to move to greenhouse growing or to newer methods of farming, such as vertical farming and hydroponic farming. However, that is not always possible depending on the farm and the crop. A way that farmers can try to solve this issue is through technology. By monitoring soil and climate conditions, farmers can better predict changes in weather and can have more time to take the necessary precautions to avoid damages to their crop. A current company that is working on something like this is Semios and other Agri-tech companies like Maple Smart Control. If new technology in farming is something that interests you, I encourage you to check them out.
