I know what you mean, I farm in England and kept my old combine quite a few years ago and give it a run every few years. It is a BM Volvo, made in Sweden in 1967, and has a Volvo Penta 6 cylinder which is probably the best engine we ever had. never laid a spanner on it in over 4000 hours, sounds lovely too. It isn't worth much but is in very good condition. As for this site it has saved me hours of time and effort. 1st class!!!!

I can't even say here how I feel about the demo derby. I hope everyone here, likewise feels the way I do about our combines. Destroying old combines is NOT a just a color war taken to the extreme physical. It is a complete holocaust, spanning every color, style, status and age. It is drifting down into the ranks of combines only 10-15 years old. Much too young to die! What I get so sick of, is hearing crap like "You can't stop the demolition derbies." Of course not! I'm not trying to stop them, either. I'm trying to get support and back up. The mindless idiots who only tell me what I can't do, are of no value anyway, to a cause. I believe well-planned coalitions can have great clout in such matters. If nothing else, focus on safety, or rather, the lack of, or its negative influence. Already, there are many concerned citizens getting lots of violent video games banned or recalled. So far, maybe the History Channel and Save Our History organization can help a great deal. People destroy a combine for money. That's the issue behind demolition derbies, salvages and scrap metal recyclers. SOH may be able to pay someone to NOT harm the combines. It's worth a try. Already, someone has taken the first step.

Okay, lets take a pole of how many combine buyers would be willing to pay up front a fee to cover the "recycling_restoration" of combines such as the fee for new tires purchasedIJ The reality is that every machine of every make reaches a point where metal fatigue and repair surpass the point of diminishing returns. That point has to be determined by the owner of machine. But I do love my old combines. My 1967 AII sits under a shed ready to harvest at my command. The 1969 G has undergone some amazing improvements and shelled 150 to 243 bu. per acre corn every day this fall until the last 70 acre farm where a small breakdown stopped her. This combine's partner in crime is a '97 R62. But the highlight of the year was transforming a $800 '77 F2 into a small tank and winning 2nd place ($500) against a huge l. Nothing surpasses the thrill of hitting head on, 2nd gear, wide open.

KBomar, I take it you are a fairly young person. I appreciate your care of the old AII, but I can't condone whatyou did to the poor 1977 F2, which did NOTHING to you. Neither did the l. It hardly makes sense to spend $800 for a combine and only get back $500. Sorry, but it just doesn't add up. Quicksilver made another post on another forum. The one who replied to it also has tremendous insight and input. Nevermind any metal fatigue. Apparently, that is not an issue with total refabrication. http:__www.ytmag.com_cgi-bin_viewit.cgiIJbd=harvestandth=12171 At any rate, this is forum is for combines and harvesting, anyway. I don't think it's the place to be talking about how weird we can be with our combines.

not bad pay 800 for a combine get 500 prize money and still get the deisel engine to put on a g that would have costed 1200 alone.

Wrong! The lOGICAl thing to do, would be to buy the F2 and use the engine for the G, although it may be too small for the much larger G. Then sell the parts and components off the F2 for $2,500 not $500. Now that is only if the F2 was not in working condition. Otherwise, the F2 would be on par with the AII capacity-wise. If the F2 was a good, running combine, killing it in the demo derby was indeed, quite sick. Again, what did it or the other combines ever do to himIJ Think about it.

You are so right, QS. Salvaging is one issue, but a demolition derbyIJ Insane! Still, the issue here, is not to dwell upon demo derbies or the ways our combines are being killed off, but rather to focus on their PRESERVATION. Old combines have just as much right to be here as any new ones do.
