  1. Thistle or no?

We have lots of goldfinches come to our feeders all year long. We don't use thistle, but they like the millet in most bird seed. You do realize that goldfinches are not gold in the winter, right?
  2. No robins yet

Shelbii, robins won't go to feeders. They eat fruit and insects. They survive the winter looking for old berries on bushes and looking for bugs onthe ground. I have MANY feeder, and I always hoped they come to suet feeders, like woodpeckers, but they don't.
  3. No robins yet

All robins don't migrate. I live in upstate New York, and we have a large population of robins that stay for the winter. It's funny how most people don't realize it. Last week, we counted about a dozen robins around our house.
  4. Cat Dramatics

Happily, my cats are very mellow and not particularly dramatic. One of them does whine when he thinks I'm late with his food, though. My cats are also pals with my dogs.
  5. Quail are hiding, not eating much

Wow, Susanna!! I'm exactly the same way, I can't read most animals books because the ending is almost always sad, and I can't handle animals being hurt or dying. I never even saw Old Yeller as a kid, my mother knew it would freak me out. Well, since quail don't live that long, you know how...
  6. Healthy popcorn

You can use an air popper to pop it without oil.
  7. Quail are hiding, not eating much

Quails are interesting birds and much more complex than you might imagine. If you want to see what quail are capable of, read the very short book, That Quail Robert.
  8. Quail are hiding, not eating much

An aviary would be really nice for them. After you build it, put their cage in it with the door open. Let them get used to it on their own terms. It's really nice that you want to make them a home.
  9. Goats need a job

How many goats do you have, and how big is your farm? Goats are very good at clearing brush and weeds if you have areas that need clearing.

  11. Is it a sewer problem?

It could be a bunch of things, a partially clogged main sewage line or your septic tank may need pumping. Call a plumber who handles sewage systems.

    What exactly is he doing?
  13. Quail are hiding, not eating much

If the cage is so big that the quail don't feel secure, it could be a problem. Also if it's in a location where the quail can see other animals or people, they may be scared. Also, if they hear a lot of unusual sounds, it could freak them out. Quail are prey animals, and they need to feel...

  15. Communal garden help

Checking with your lawyer is a good point. I'd check with your insurance agent, as well.
  16. Communal garden help

I'd ask your cooperative extension agent. They probably know how to do that.
  17. Why aren't we all raising honey bees?

I agree with you, but raising bees is not as easy as it seems anymore. Our hive experienced colony collapse. I never thought I would mourn the loss of insects, but bees are just so interesting, it was a shame to lose them. Bees are very vulnerable to pesticides, and although we're organic...
  18. Easiest for waste management

Since rabbits are small and are in cages, I would agree that rabbits are easier. When I had my dairy goat farm, I had a couple of employees who mucked out the barn. That was a huge expense.
  19. Delivery van or truck?

I also agree that a van would be better for delivering cooked foods and produce. I have used both a full sized cargo van and a pick up truck to deliver farm products. But for cooked foods, or produce you really need a covered van. If I'm delivering hay, I used my pick up truck. A cargo van...
  20. Food poisoning

Food poisoning is really a general term. It usually means food that is contaminated with bacteria usually due to the food being mishandled in some way. It's possible that you may have more resistance to the bacteria than your husband does, or more likely that he's sick from something else...
