  1. Best milk goats

Nigerian Dwarfs have the highest butterfat content of goats milk, and the taste of their milk is outstanding. I also love their personalities. But they are small,so they don't produce as much as the full size goats. Nubians probably have the best tasting milk of the full sized goats. Saanens...
  2. Barn floor options

I put grooves in my concrete. It seemed to give them traction. Of course I did that when the concrete was still wet. Cutting grooves into hardened concrete is going to be quite a task.
  3. Cows mad

I don't have cows, but goats HATE the snow!!! When I was milking 100 goats, making them walk out of their barn in the snow to the milk house was a chore. They did it, but they let me know that they weren't happy.
  4. Chicken wire help

What exactly is the problem with the chicken wire? If it's falling down, do you have enough posts holding it up?
  5. Breed or artificial inseminate

We used to breed goats and sheep. We always kept males, and never used AI. I have some friends that have used it. AI can be especially useful if you want to add certain genetics to your herd without increasing the number of male animals that you have to keep.
  6. Protecting the land

We recycle and compost, but most importantly we are totally organic.
  7. Attachments and implements

it all depends on what you're producing on your farm. My most used implements are my loader, back blade and brush hog, in that order.
  8. Barn floor options

Good point Birdie. When I put the concrete floor in my barn, I textured the floor into slight ridges for extra traction. None of my animals ever fell. Plus I kept a layer of bedding on the concrete.
  9. Barn floor options

I found that concrete works best for goats, and most livestock. Keep a layer of bedding on it, and it's fine.
  10. Ticks on cattle

I should have said that chickens are almost as good as guinea fowl in controlling ticks. Also keeping grass and weeds as low as possible helps reduce ticks.
  11. Watching the birds

I'm a life-long birdwatcher myself. My wife and I have a bunch of bird feeders. We enjoy wildlife watching, as well. I used to also be a wildlife rehabilitator and still occasionally care for injured wildlife. We also try to make sure that our property is wildlife friendly, with as many...
  12. The End Of The World?

Hopefully, from today forward, the world will slowly return to something like it was before the past four years.
  13. Barn cat hurt

If that's all you are able to do, try it. Is there any way you can wrap him in a towel and get him into a carrier? I've had barn cats get injured in a similar fashion, and they've surprised me by letting me put them in a carrier when they were hurt. Cats are smart and he might realize that...
  14. Orchids dropping blooms

My wife grows orchids (not to sell, just for her enjoyment) and I asked her. She says they lose their blooms after about 2 months and it takes them about 4 months to grow new blooms. They may be losing their blooms just because the blooms are done.
  15. HVAC sounds like a helicopter

I agree with Cowhuna, it could be a belt, or even a bearing. Better have it looked at ASAP.
  16. Drama queens

Oh yeah!!! Goats are drama queens (and kings). They HATE to get wet. When I had my dairy goat farm, getting my girls to walk out, when it was raining, to the milk house was difficult. They would do it, but you sure heard a lot of grumbling and complaining.
  17. Ticks on cattle

I keep a flock of guinea fowl on my property. They love to eat ticks and do a good job of keeping their numbers down.
  18. Neighbor complained of rats

Be careful with this. If you put traps where the chickens can get to them, the chickens will be injured or even killed by the traps. If you use poison, if any dying rats or mice make it to where the chickens are, the chickens will probably eat them and they will be poisoned as well. Chickens...
  19. Boiler issues

I'm no expert on boilers, but it sound like there's something wrong with the aquastat.
  20. Slugs and beetles

I assume you mean Japanese Beetles. I use Japanese Beetle traps. They're very effective.
