  1. Neighbor complained of rats

The rats are probably after the chicken feed. Rats will also eat eggs.
  2. Vegetable gardens - winter

We do the same. We take out the old plants, compost them, and cover the garden with a think layer of straw.
  3. Where are my hens?

I love my animals, too. All of my animals, not just my dogs and cats, but my livestock, too. Been there, done that, I understand. Chickens are prey animals, when they think they're in danger, they hide. I was hoping your girls were hiding out until they felt the coast was clear...

If you're gonna have animals, whether they're pets or livestock, you'd better have a realy good vet. We have a GREAT vet!!! I trust her with all of my animals. She's a wonderful vet and a great surgeon. She has saved the lives of many of my animals. she also gives me great advice on taking...

Hens will lay eggs without roosters, but if you want chicks, then you do need a rooster.

  7. How should I go about finding a farmer to work for?

Contact your local cooperative extension, they'll not only help you find a farmer to work for, but they'll have courses, usually for free or very inexpensive, for people who want to learn about farming.
  8. Where are my hens?

Well, it's possible that the neighbor scared them so much that they ran away to hide, and the 2 that are still missing either can't find their way home or are still too scared to come out. If your neighbors are looking for them, hopefully someone will find them and bring them back.
  9. Raising farm animals together

I've only had experience with Glouceshire Old Spots, a heritage breed. The surprising thing is that they are very mellow and friendly pigs, but they move shockingly fast when they see a chicken. I have no idea what happens with other breeds. I ended up putting a much taller fence around their...

  12. Trump-supporters stormed Capitol

I think Jimmy Kimmel summed up the Trump supporters best... "These people are not Americans. There is no we the people, there is me the people and that's it. The wildest part is these MAGA marchers think Donald Trump cares about them. He doesn't care about you. He doesn't care about your wife...
  13. Retiring?

Thanks, Greg. It was one of the hardest things we've ever had to do. The worst was re-homing our goats, sheep, llamas, horses, etc. They were all beloved pets to us. We didn't sell ANY of them, but found them all loving homes. Even though we had a fairly large goat dairy farm (125 goats)...
  14. The food policy

WOW!!! Great topic!!! I think farmers should be given incentives to implement conservation programs. Doing that is expensive, but really worth it in the long run, and since farmers operate on such a thin profit margin, they need help to start a conservation program.
  15. Staying safe while handling cattle.

Very good points, and that's not even mentioning bulls!!!
  16. Retiring?

My wife and I made the hard decision to sell our farm this past year. Luckily, for us, farming was never our main income, but selling our farm of over 100 acres with 5 barns and moving to a 9 acre small (for us) place was hard. We still have a huge garden for our own use and have a few...
  17. Father fell

Your parents aging is a terrible thing that we all go through. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!!!!
  18. Trump-supporters stormed Capitol

I have TRIED not to comment on politics, but this is TOO much!!!! This is what happens when a self centered, narcissist is in power and his party refuses to condemn him. Antifa had NOTHING to do with this. This is TRUMP, pure and simple. This is a dark day in American history, but it should...
  19. Finicky chickens

First of all, how old are they? Are they mature? Second, as Smarty Plants said, some breeds of chickens don't lay eggs in the winter. You can often fix that by putting a light on in the hen house during the day.
  20. How much of a threat are predators to livestock?

It depends on where you live. Different areas have different perdators. I live in upstate New York, and we have coyotes, wolves, bears and foxes. I never had any predation problems with any of them, but I used to loose a lot of chickens to a neighbor's dog. to keep my goats and sheep safe, I...
